WharnsCBCSPORTS: Nashville's Shea Weber is awarded a$7.5 million salary arbitration.

So, if he has the option of taking 2 years ( not sure about that ) does he do it? Should he?

Right, thanks Busta, 28 games his first year.

Yeah, and a lot of time in the AHL. I remember this discussion came up earlier in the summer and I looked into his recalls and demotions, and based on what was there, he was not on the active roster for long enough to qualify for an "Aggregate Season," as the CBA calls it.

That's probably what my grey cells are trying to remember, damn you database!!!!

He and his agents had to declare that before the hearing, and they decided to go for a 1 season decision.

Hells bells, thanks again. Nice award, about right I think. If the reports about Nashvilles offer are true I wonder if it has any influence on their relationship going forward?

Weber is probably waiting to see what happens with Suter and Rinne before he commits to a long-term deal.

In their says 2 more years as a RFA.  I don't get why though.  He will have played 7 seasons and will be over 25 years old.

I must be missing something here.

This will only be his 6th season towards UFA eligibility. In order to earn a season, a player has to be on the active roster for 40 or more games, and Weber was not in his first year in the league and, therefore, has one more RFA season after this one.

I told a guy at work it must have something to do with his 28 game in his first year, thanks

This gives him the highest cap hit among d-men and a tie for 7th overall.

It'll be interesting to see what, if any, influence this has on Doughty. There's been some speculation that his camp has been waiting to see what Weber ended up with before getting serious enough to sign.

I think that's pretty much a given at this point.

So, as it stands, in 2 years Crosby, Weber, Getzlaf, Perry, J. Staal, D. Roy, Clowe, Horton, Hartnell, Morrow, PM Bouchard, Edler, Weiss, Lupul, Zajac, among others are UFA's.  Granted, most probably won't make it to market but it could very well end up being the best UFA class ever.

While Weber could re-sign a new, long-term deal before next summer, players who go through the arbitration process usually don't remain with their teams beyond their arbiter-awarded contract due to the fact the process can be nasty.

Management also has to take into consideration defenseman Ryan Suter and goaltender Pekka Rinne will be eligible for UFA status next summer, plus there's the uncertainty over how the next collective bargaining agreement will affect payrolls. They must ensure there's enough money available to retain those two.Failing to avoid arbitration and re-sign Weber to a long-term extension, however, could have repercussions in their negotiations with Suter and Rinne.

If this process ultimately ends up driving Weber out of Nashville, it could send the message to Predators fans that the front office is more interested in balance sheets than building a winner. It doesn?t make sense to put all their eggs in one basket, but for a club hoping to build up their fan base in a non-traditional hockey market, low-balling their most marketable player won't help.

How can an arbitrator give him the highest dman salary in the league as an RFA?  Are they saying he is a significantly better player than chara, lidstrom, Keith?

He's at least 1 million better than Phenuef.

No, they're saying his value for a single season, based on comparable RFA contracts and his performance is $7.5M for the season. His agents obviously presented a very convincing case. Chara's and Lidstrom's contracts wouldn't have factored into the decision, as UFA contracts are not allowed to be considered as evidence. Keith is set to earn $8M next season, which, in terms of arbitration decisions, is more important than the cap hit. Also, not that it would have impacted the decision, but, Chara is set to earn $8.5M in real dollars next season. Lidstrom's team friendly contract had no impact on the decision, nor should it be used to, for lack of a better word, punish other defencemen, as Lidstrom is a special case.

I've read the same.  Hockey capacity around 14,500 with some terrible sightlines.  While that's not much smaller than Winnipeg, the fanbase just isn't present (although the population certainly would be).

There's not a NHL fanbase in New York City?

This article lends credence to one of many reasons the Islanders should remain on Long Island....

...The Islanders also make up half of one of the greatest rivalries in sports, alongside the New York Rangers. Though the stakes haven?t been as high in recent years, the intra-city battle has a venomous history and its own signature rituals (?Potvin Sucks!?). Having two teams in North America?s biggest media market (plus the Devils just across the state line) is a big business selling point for the NHL, even if the teams aren?t doing well....

The NHL Research and Development Camp will take place in Etobicoke, ON, on August 17-18/'11.

Here are the things they will be looking into:

? No-touch icing
? No line change for team committing an offside
? Faceoff variations (penalty line for center committing an infraction; all faceoffs in circles; same linesman drops puck for all faceoffs)
? No icing permitted while shorthanded
? Verification line (additional line behind the goal line)
? Overtime variation (four minutes of 4-on-4 followed by three minutes of 3-on-3)
? Shootout variation (5-man shootout precedes sudden-death format)
? Shallow-back nets

? After offside, faceoff goes back to offending team's end
? Faceoff variations (both centers must come set on whistle; all faceoffs in circles; same linesman drops puck for all face-offs)
? Delayed penalty variation (offending team must exit zone in possession of puck to stop play)
? Changes only permitted on-the-fly (except after goals and upon manpower changes)
? Strict enforcement of goaltenders covering puck outside crease (Rule 63.2)
? Remove trapezoid
? Verification line
? Allow hand passes in all zones
? Overtime variation (switch ends)
? Shootout variation (5-man shootout with repeat players if tied after 5 shooters)
? Thin-netting nets

? 'Hybrid' icing
? Offside variation (offending team can't change and faceoff in its end zone)
? Faceoff variations (player encroaching can't replace thrown-out center, all faceoffs in circles; same linesman drops puck for all faceoffs)
? All penalties to be served in their entirety
? Strict enforcement of goaltenders covering puck outside crease (rule 63.2)
? Bear-hug rule
? Verification line
? Overtime variation (switch ends for four minutes of 4-on-4, followed by three minutes of 3-on-3)
? Shootout variation (3-man shoot out with repeat shooters if tied after 3 shooters)
? Shallow-back nets

? All-Star Skills competition (fastest skater, breakaway challenge, accuracy shooting, skills relay challenge, hardest shot, elimination shootout)

Other technology/modifications to be tested during various sessions:

? On-ice officials communication -- ref-to-ref wireless
? Overhead camera -- to assist Hockey Operations reviews of various initiatives (verification line/goal netting/in-net camera)
? In-net camera -- mounted camera at one end with one net with camera view focused on the goal line to help verify goals
? Robotic camera --  to test camera angles for coverage closer to ice
? Video replay application review
? Curved glass -- protection options at players bench areas

This seems like as good a place as any to post.
Former Capitals winger Matt Bradley: Alexander Semin ?just doesn?t care?

Asked to describe the discipline problems without naming names:

?I don?t mind saying Alexander Semin?s name, because he?s one guy who has so much talent, he could easily be the best player in the league, and just for whatever reason, just doesn?t care.

?When you?ve got a guy like that, you need him to be your best player, or one of your best players, and when he doesn't show up, you almost get the sense that he wants to be back in Russia. That?s tough to win when you?ve got a guy like that who?s supposed to be your best player not being your best player, or one of your best players."

3 on 3 could get interesting....do you go with 2 d and 1 forward or 2 forwards and 1 d or get crazy and go with 3 forwards?
