2012 NHL Entry Draft

Any chance that Columbus will trade their draft picks (Yakupov, etc.,) for a combination of top prospects/top goaltender, or whatever the Blue Jackets so desperately require?  (This may or not be included in a Rick Nash trading).

Have read that the Blue Jackets are fed up of the problems as per  their Russian roster players and aren't too keen on acquiring yet more Russians.

Sounds almost ridiculous for a team like Columbus to be wanting to trade their top picks, but then, nothing much makes sense with that team so far.

Anything's possible.

Maybe they just want to trade down a bit to acquire a different player than Yakupov?

I think that this whole thing about Columbus being afraid to draft another lousy Russian player is more of a media fabrication where they have put 2+2 together.  It would be no more or less a concern of the league in general.

Columbus' problem isn't drafting lousy Russian players, its drafting lousy players, period.

I'm not sure I agree. I think selling the fans is a major point in a market like
Columbus and drafting another Russian after their dismal showings will be a tough sell. I do not know what Nail is like but no where have I read that he's anywhere near a "generational" talent like Ovie or now Malkin.

I know any 18 year old is a risk but Ovie/Malkin IMO were pretty safe picks in terms of expectations. I'd like to hear other comments about the 3 Russians and will do so in the future.

The way things stand now, I might have Radek Faska as our "worse case scenario" and man, I'd be thrilled to draft him.

"He?s not afraid to play in traffic, go to the net, take hits, deliver hits and he plays with a bit of an edge. He?s got real good playmaking skills, good puck ability ? he?s got real good ability to get the puck through to the net and make plays." ? NHL Central Scouting?s Chris Edwards

Apparently, he's now 6'3', 203 lbs and obviously growing. I mean, does this not sound like a guy we're looking for?

I'm assuming by the "3 Russians" you're referring to Yakupov, Grigorenko and Galchenyuk.

I think it's worthwhile to note that Galchenyuk is of Russian decent, his father, also a hockey player, was from Belarus, but Alex was born in Milwaukee and has lived in North America, Russia and Europe. Prior to the playing for the Sarnia Sting he played for the Chicago Young Americans U18. I think classifying him as Russian is a bit misleading.

You know I've been thinking about him and he sure sounds a lot like Grabovski, except with more size of course. That's definitely not a bad thing, but with a season like this I'd sure hope we get somebody with a higher ceiling than that. Like you said, as far as worst-case scenarios go he's not too shabby, but I still hope we at least get a top-5 pick and go with somebody else.

He's also stated that he plans to play for the United States in IIHF tournaments if given a chance. He was surprisingly left off the upcoming U-18 roster for them, but that's mostly because they like to go with their development program squad (and probably a little to do with politics).

I read about that, it does seem like some amount of politics going on there, no OHL players picked at all. To be honest though, I'm not sure how many other OHL players would be eligible.

I see that Craig Button at tsn.ca has dropped Grigo to 14th while Subban has jumped to 10th and Finnish player Teravainen is now in 7th spot. ISS still has Grigo at #4 (an article on tsn.ca says he is now 4th but the ISS ranking page still shows him at #3).

If this diversity of opinion is shared among the GMs and their scouting staff, it may lead to more than the usual number of trades.

I like this guy's attitude...

"Whoever drafts me, I'll be excited to put this jersey on. I want to work hard for this team and give everything. It's the NHL."

Nail Yakupov interviewed by Oilers organization.  Could be a hint that Edmonton will draft the young Russian.

Oilers GM Kevin Lowe is said to have been very impressed with the play of top North American prospect defenceman Ryan Murray, who played for Canada at the WHCs.

Murray ended up getting some extra time to audition after a series of injuries allowed him to play for Canada at the recent IIHF World Hockey Championship. Oilers president Kevin Lowe ran that team and raved about the play of the teenager, who didn't look at all out of place against men.

I don't understand people not liking Grigorenko.  I would be happy with Grigorenko, Forsberg, Galchenyuk.  If they are going to pick a defensemen it better be Dumba. Ryan Murray sounds like carlo cola.  He was good in all areas but not great in any.

I don't think that nobody likes him, they're just scared a bit of a wasted pick. The guy has all kinds of talent and the right size for us, it's just not a sure fire pick. I'm on the fench about him. I'd rather Burke trade another asset, move up and get a guy like Galchenyuk personally, if that is presented.

I think the draft between 3-7 is a complete crapshoot and things have ebbed and flowed so damn much. I really don't think we need to use an asset to get someone unless we really love the player.

Personally, I'm going to say the same thing I did last year, and that is that I trust Morrison's opinion. I'm sure Burke will have all the insight he needs and that we will get a good player either way.
