2013-2014 NHL Thread

I'm sure people have become inured to some extent by articles about what a scam public money is for private arenas but what's going on in Detroit, a city where they can't even afford to buy proper equipment for their firefighters, really borders on the criminal.

It's definitely becoming an issue of fatigue for myself, but it's yet another great piece on what a travesty these "poor me" owners bilk cities with.  And yet when it comes time to open CBAs, the owners are the ones who tend to be viewed favourably.

DarrenDreger: Hearing the NHL has reversed part of its penalty against the Devils for cap circumvention (Kovalchuk contract)....

DarrenDreger: NHL will award Devils with the 30th pick in the Draft instead of the 1st round pick as usually determined. Also forgiving $1.5 mil of fine.

DarrenDreger: Needless to say, NHL teams are not happy with the leagues decision to let the Devils off the hook.

I wonder how much of this has to do with the confusion about the deadline for the Devils to make a decision that came up a couple years ago.

I'm guessing the reversal also has something to do with how badly it all played out for the Devils.

The reversal is typical NHL nonsense but, then again, the punishment in the first place and the "violation of the spirit of the CBA" was hogwash to begin with.

I thought the penalties were pretty insane at the time but still how do you go back on them? What would have happened if the Devils forfeited their pick two drafts ago when they picked 29th? Would the league still have had a change of heart and just given them another pick this year?

To go back on the penalty is totally bizarre.

The NHL has also rescinded the Boston Bruins 2013 appearance in the Cup Finals, saying the Devils will now get credit for it since the regular season result was too harsh on them.

"The 1st round pick IS MIIIINE"

- Lou Lamourello, Sith Lord.

And it just seems fishy, as DGB alludes to on twitter: Lamoriello didn't give up the 29th overall pick for some reason, and then the NHL announces this the day after the trade deadline this season which I'm sure is a coincidence.

Everything about it just reeks.

Like I said, I can't help but think that the Kovalchuk retirement played a role.

mirtle: As part of new terms, Devils "will not be permitted to trade or transfer its right to the 30th overall selection."

Not to worry. By the draft, Lou will find a way around that too.

"Ahh you've had a tough year Lou, how does the 1st overall pick sound?"

Lou: "can we have the 2015 Stanley Cup as well?"

Gary: "You didn't even have to ask, Lou."

All I have to say is that it'd be fun as hell getting into a line brawl while your brother is on the ice with you.

Because Kovalchuk retired early, shouldn't the Devils be on the hook for a re-capture penalty?

I believe they are.  But he actually retired before the very large chunks of his contract kicked in.  Thus, the recapture penalty is less $500K per year.

$250k cap hit until 2025.
