It's obviously not something to draw a conclusion from yet but it'd be interesting if the Red Sox were a team that consistently hit Dickey well being as John Farrell has a good deal of experience coaching Tim Wakefield.

Personally, I would hope that it is more that Dickey had a bad day and his pitches weren't moving the way they can. If it is something that can be learned, I would expect other major league teams to pick up on it quickly, and that could be bad news for R.A. and Jays fans.

Well, it's tough to sort of get a good read on how to judge a guy like Dickey going forward because there are so few good comparable players out there. For instance we hear a lot about how at 38 we shouldn't expect Dickey to decline the way other pitchers of that age might because he throws the knuckleball but a) Dickey throws a harder knuckler than just about anyone else ever and b) the idea that knuckleball pitchers don't decline at that age isn't really true as a rule. Tim Wakefield never had a +3.0 WAR past the age of 40. Joe Niekro was pretty bad post 40. Wilbur Wood was good at 32, finished at 35. Tom Candiotti fell off a cliff at 40 and on and on.

Basically the idea that knuckleball pitchers can pitch forever effectively comes from Phil Niekro and Hoyt Wilhelm and there may be no more substance to that than saying that fastball pitchers can pitch forever because Nolan Ryan did it.

Would there be a difference throwing the knuckleball indoors? Less wind/atmosphere to move it about, so, since it's 70 mph or whatever and not moving easier to hit than in a blustery outdoor stadium?

It's an interesting question but just looking at it casually it doesn't appear as though knuckleballers through history have had worse numbers in a dome than outdoors.

Knuckleballers prefer a controlled environment, like a dome. They can better predict where their pitches will go.

They may prefer it but it doesn't seem to result in significantly better pitching.

I just looked - he has four errors already this season? Wow.

And now he hit into a DP in the top of the 3rd.

Lawrie needs to come back so I no longer have to watch Bonifacio boot balls at 2nd.  His error has cost another run today.

It would be awfully nice to have him on the bench where he belongs. It would also be nice if the heart of the order could actually start producing.

Yeah, there are lots of things that need to start happening - the team just isn't clicking on any cylinders right now.

The inning eater has thrown 61 pitches through 3 innings already today. Looks like the bullpen is going to get another workout.

The starting rotation could probably be doing better too.

"J. Bautista grounded out to pitcher."

I wonder if he threw his bat. :)

Joey bats has only one more hit than Lind. Granted, two of hit hits are home runs....
