2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Falling back to 9 games off the division lead and I think 5 off the wild card. One game below .500 now, but I would imagine they hang around that mark until their next hot streak. Hopefully these nagging injuries to Lind, EE and Arencibia don't turn into long term things. Lind is particularly worrisome, since it appears to be his back again.

I don't think it's going to matter much until they can get some consistency from the starting pitchers.

Unfortunately all of the SP's have pretty much panned out to the glass half empty view of things when they brought this group together.  JJ and Morrow have had injury problems, Dickey is coming around after being very inconsistent in April and May, Romero continued to be a total bust, Beurhle has been pretty 'meh' all year and seems to be struggling vs. AL hitters and Happ takes a fluke injury to the head and knee. I mean what else could really go wrong?

The bullpen has been brilliant in saving their bacon, but the wear and tear on them from having to pitch waaaay too many innings could really add up in aug/sept and ruin a really good thing.

Looks like JP Arencibia isn't too happy with the criticisms he has been receiving from Zaun and Hayhurst on Sportsnet:

It will be interesting to see where this goes, particularly since he was quite open about Zaun's alleged link to PEDs.

It's almost like the Jays don't currently have a player who was recently suspended for PEDs

That flushing sound you are hearing is the Jays season. Again.

Tigers up 10-0 in the 9th, Jays about to lose 3 of 4 in the series, and are now 3-8 since their 11 game winning streak.

Arencibia silenced his critics with one hit.

Not very smart of Arencibia to 'low-ball'  Zaun concerning the PEDs issue.  (Zaun had his troubles in his personal life, and, by being given a chance to play for the Jays,  helped him on more than one level).

Since Arencibia's personal life seems quite stable, there aren't too may excuses or reasons why his play isn't.

While Arencibia should shut it, Zaun comes off like an arrogant idiot when criticizing and Hayhurst comes off like he has a chip on his shoulder.

Good ol' Jays.

Last night they lost 3-0 to Cleveland while outhitting them 8-4. Jays batted 1-11 with RISP, with the only hit a single that stopped the runner at 3rd. Our hero JP Arencibia came up twice with runners in scoring position and less than 2 out and struck out both times. I would argue that the first time in the 4th turned the game around - Jays had runners at 2nd and 3rd before JP struck out. Next half inning, Cleveland scored 2 and that was it. I won't look at JP the same after his recent mouth-off.

Not sure what the Jays stats are with RISP after the big run and the subsequent tank, but it looks like they have gone back to their old non-clutch ways. :(

That was incredibly frustrating to watch.  Overall they've been fine with RISP but it's games like that where some of the holes in the lineup really show up, such as JP and his incredible impatience at the plate, Bonifacio just downright, flat out awful and where they seem to just throw fundamental hitting strategy right out the window.

Jiminez was awful, gave them more than enough chances and they couldn't get anyone in.  Games like that they have to win to stay in it.  They blew that one big time.

John Johnson FINALLY pitches a really solid game and they can't score a single run.

I thought Johnson was excellent.  He had control of his pitches.

Too bad that his performance was wasted, as has happened all too often this season.

Not really. It's more been the offensive performances that have been wasted by bad starting pitching, especially from Johnson.  Last night was kind of the reversal of that.

As a whole I can't fault the offense but last night boy did the faults of JPA and Bonfiacio ever stand out.  Just awful.

Arencibia needs to go. He's bad bad bad.  One of the worst OBP's in the last year of any player.

Totally agree. And when you factor in his embarassing BB:K and sub-par defence you really have one awful player.

This is where the disappointment of trading probably the best catching prospect in MLB along with some other potential decent guys for what is probably going to end up being a .500 pitcher.

Like we need reminding.  :(

Though, to be fair, considering the fact that he's continued to be injury prone, that particular prospect probably doesn't have a long future behind the plate, either. He likely winds up as first baseman in the long run.

And with the re-emergence of Lind, and EE on the team for the foreseeable future we're pretty set there.

Don't we still have a really good catching prospect?

Well, keeping D'Arnaud may have allowed the Jays to trade one of them for a considerable return, or, at the very least, he could have been moved for a younger, longer term asset.

Jiminez? Yea, he looks like he could be pretty good.

P.S. Anyone remember Yan Gomes? He has an .800 OPS this year
