Therrien pinned the loss on Subban. This is clearly what other fans felt like watching the Randy-era Leafs.

Yup, at the start of the clip I assumed the net must have been empty and the coach was mad because it's an even riskier play in that situation.

But, nope they have their goalie and none of his teammates can cover him, unreal that the coach pinned that on him.

Live by the Subban, Die by the Subban.  He was aggressive and guys like PK should be allowed to do that.  He blew an edge.  The other 4 guys were nowhere in sight.  The fact that a crap coach pins that loss on him is astounding to me.

So Therrien to be fired soon?  Subban has the big contract, easier to be rid of the coach than PK.  I get the feeling from Habs fans that Therrien isn't that fond of PK the last few seasons, something has to give.

Corey Hirsch with a good look at how to reduce the size of goalie equipment while still keeping them safe:

That was excellent, thanks for sharing.

The League would be so much more fun, I wonder if we'd see guys getting closer to Wayne's numbers again.

EDIT: I wonder if this change would be essentially the end to the butterfly goalie as we know it, they'd need to stand-up a lot more as closing the five hole with those smaller pads would be much more taxing on the lower body. More strains etc if they stuck to the traditional butterfly style.

I know the league has been working with a number of active goalies in terms of redesigning the equipment, so there's a real possibility a significant number of these changes will actually be implemented. The only one I really question is reducing the height of the stick. I don't see a good reason why goalies shouldn't be allowed to have the same length stick as a skater. It won't impact the goal rate significantly. Everything else? I say go for it. Creates a significant amount more available net, and woudl really begin to separate the great goalies from the rest.

Vezina winning goalie Pelle Lindbergh.

I mean peewee goalies aren't much smaller than that now.

The number of goalies absolutely losing their mind about this is hilarious.

Of course they are. All of the guys that rely on simply being big and moving laterally are going to be out of work.

I will say that I didn't agree entirely on his motives for cutting down the pads.  I like the lateral dimension cuts and certainly part of the top of the pads should be brought in but I'm struggling with the notion of a knee pad protecting the thighs.  The current hockey pant isn't well suited to be taking 107 MPH Shea Weber slapshots.  I'd rather not see goalies out with thigh contusions.

I didn't really understand the rationale on the reduction in stick size either.

Everything else I loved.  I like the idea of wrapping the equipment on the arms/shoulders.  I like the smaller glove and the blocker redesign.

I said this before in the net-widening discussion but I'm not pro-widening the net, I'm pro-the NHL doing something that will actually address the issue. I'm fine with the solution coming from goalie equipment being shrunk but the "solution" can't be trying to win an argument with the PA and goalies for the next 10 years.

Excellent suggestions from Cory Hirsch.  Don't agree with the reduction of the goalie stick, but the rest of the changes are welcome.

I remember the goaltenders of bygone eras.  Compared to those days, today's netminders look 'monstrous.  The equipment adds to the equation.  Some changes should be a definite requirement.

Well if they're going to call off goals for opposing players clipping the knob of the stick, I can understand not wanting that sticking out as far as the goalies can get away with.

If you want a good laugh listen to this Montreal broadcaster freaking out over the Habs.  It gets good after the 5 minute mark:

While equipment is definitely way bigger, so are goalies.

I'll agree that goalies need to be slimmed down, but if we think that's going to solve the 'goal scoring problems' or suddenly allow people to put up Gretzky like numbers I think we may be disappointed.

I don't think anyone expects this to completely solve the goal scoring issues, nor do I think anyone seriously believes it'll lead to players approaching Gretzky type numbers (at least, not early/mid 80s Gretzky). However, it wouldn't shock me if these changes will lead to enough of a change that we'll see a few more 50 goal seasons.

I'm good with all of those changes, including the stick. The example goalie's stick is easily 10 inches or more longer than it needs to be. In fact, shortening would probably help the goalie's ability to handle the puck. He wasn't advocating to reduce it to less than skaters' stick lengths.

Preparation & training goaltending style: how it has helped...

Personal trainer, Adam Francilia's techniques...

"He's just so specific to what we do, which is a breath of fresh air," Dubnyk said. "It's all stability. Everything we do we seem to be holding ourselves up on our hands, so everything has to be firing. I've noticed it big time."

"Adam is money for goalies and he just loves the positon and loves to work on different movements you need to be strong," said Reimer, who has worked with Francilia for seven years. "We put the same jersey on but we play a different sport than everyone else. So we do so much more stuff that is just specific to goaltending. We're not doing heavy squats, we're not doing deadlifts, we're just doing stuff that is super specific to goalies. You want to be strong and stable in the end range of your movements."

"The neurological demands, the reaction time, the nervous system, recovery, are all unique to the positon," Francilia said. "I have spent the better part of 16 years developing a position-specific protocol for dryland training."

That includes what Francilia called dry-ice training, bringing off-ice training to the rink by using resistance bands attached to goaltenders.

"That's been fascinating," said Francilia, who attaches goalies to a harness and closely analyzes the impact on typical goalie movement patterns on the ice. "When they are pushing against the resistance we overload the muscles to work them, but if there is a weakness it becomes magnified because they are pushing beyond their body weight. Coming back with the band helping, they get over speed so I can watch what happens with their braking system and if they are compensating. It's not just guys flying back and forth with a resistance band."
