2016-17 Centennial Leafs General Team Discussion

I'm pretty sure this board is proof positive that Babcock is wrong.

Edit: Or Shilton is wrong anyway. We knew the team liked the contract.

No offense to anyone here, but I'm siding with Babcock here over an online group of posters trying to be amateur scouts, coaches and GM's, and anyone else that posts on online forums. Apologies to those I've offended. :o

Well, we just armchair this stuff from 10000 feet, and really just look at numbers and on-ice play and associated results.

Nik mentioned it a little while back, from the perspective of managing the personalities/team dynamics/leadership, we really have no idea, and I'm never really comfortable discussing that stuff.

I'm fairly certain Aristotle will get over it.

I'm not sure what I wrote specifically you're referring to here but if the idea is that those sorts of dynamics aren't entirely knowable to us therefore we have little insight into them and so on then I still think that's true but that's a long ways away from a coach or a GM saying "Leadership!" as some sort of get out of jail free card insulating them from criticism.

I think we could all point to a half-dozen terrible signings/trades made by the Leafs alone by people with more direct knowledge than we have where leadership or intangibles were directly cited as one of the selling points.

So I think what I said would probably better be summed up as saying that when I said "we" don't really understand this stuff, that includes people who actually run hockey teams.

No worries, I'm with you. I mean just look at the state of the Islanders this season.

#intangibles  ;)

This is what happens when your team is called the Islanders but in fact you don't play on an Island. Identity Crisis

I'm not sure where you're getting your geography from but the cleverly named Long Island is, in fact, an island.

They move to the Bronx now?

Lost in Highlander's confusion as to why they had to build the Brooklyn Bridge is the fact that the Islanders in this off-season probably signed the guy with the most concrete and off-cited positive Leadership abilities available in Andrew Ladd.

The green bolded part is essentially what I recall being said, and I should be more careful in terms of putting words in your mouth.

Technically they are still on an island so I stand corrected. Just not Long Island

No, no. They play in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is on Long Island. They just moved West, they didn't change islands.

Has my stance on Matt Martin changed since seeing a bit more behind the scenes? It has softened. He's a real cool dude. Stance is the same on him as a player.

Do I still hate the deal and the fact that someone in the management group insisted we needed to carry this element of on-ice justice? Yes.

I'm glad you posted this cause I'm on the same page, and I was pretty dead set against this signing. My main concern wasn't so much that they didn't need someone to make sure the other team has a reason to rush their passes, rather, I didn't like the headhunting tendency of the line in NYI. In TO, I think I've seen one borderline hit from Martin and maybe two bad penalties.

It'll be interesting to see who gets exposed in the expansion draft.

I would definitely imagine guys like Martin, Komarov, Bozak, get left exposed for sure if left untraded.

But I can't see Vegas picking a Martin over a Bozak or Komarov, so I imagine he'll be a Leaf a while yet.
