2016-17 Centennial Leafs General Team Discussion

You know what, maybe the Pens wouldn't have been that tough to beat after all. Washington is seriously exposing their D right now and Fleury just isn't good enough to cover for their mistakes.

With Murray and Letang out, the challenge with the Pens was containing their offence. With so many of their players supposedly playing hurt (like, half their forwards have been skipping practice), that may not be as big a challenge, either.

LeBrun has a lot of free time now (for TSN), so he's doing one-on-one interviews with NHL GMs at the Draft Combine.

This is a brief clip of his talk with Lou.

It's pretty inane.

Here's Benning's, in case he tampers again.

It's looking like no captain for this upcoming season.  I can live with that.  It's a toss-up for me who would get it.

I think it is essentially Matthews', but they're still sheltering him. The other good options are too core to strip the title from later, so rather than sewing it onto a seat warmer (Rielly), might as well just let the decision wait.

Benning looked appropriately disheveled.

MLHS with the goods transcribing the Lou interview.

You have the 17th overall pick. Of course, the age-old debate at the draft is taking the best player available or picking by positional need. It?s well-documented that you are a team that hopes to get better on the backend as time goes on here, but how do you think things will fall as you get to that 17th pick in terms of that debate?

Lamoriello: I?ve always felt, without question, that you always take the best player available because you can never have enough quality players. Now, if it were a call between two equal players, then you would look at a position and have a choice. When it?s the best player by some sense, I don?t think you should have a choice.

This has absolutely no bearing on performance, but once Shanahan came on board, there was a mandate for a professional dress code (even Nonis adhered, as best he could). That first Fan Fest under his direction:

Right out of the Steve Jobs' keynote textbook.

Again, absolutely no bearing on performance, but it shows a unity in decision making and an eye for the brand identity. It's less about what suiting up says, and more about what the opposite would say.

Some variations on the theme:

Is it wrong that I read Lou's answers using his voice in my head?

I mean... I think every single NHL team does this. And always has.

I don't remember our previous front offices looking so deliberate and uniform.

Other front offices I just don't have enough experience with.

If this is partially a "Benning is an idiot" thread, then I honestly find it astonishing that he's STILL talking about Jacob Markstrom being groomed to be a #1 goalie in the league. The dudes's 27 years old and has played in just 107 NHL games. Cut bait already.

All hockey executives wear suits on the job, and that includes basically all on-camera appearances. I'll agree though that Dubas and Shanahan pull it off much better than Benning.

Suits, yes. Always suits.

But colour and style coordinated with team colours (down to the shoes), rather than just dark suit from the closet? I don't recall seeing that before. They also do ties for games and press conferences, and no ties for fan engagement events.

Does it say "we really don't care what gets worn in a professional environment" like, you know, Steve Jobs?

Yeah, seriously. He's a decent backup, if you need a guy to shoulder a larger than typical number of games for a backup, but, a #1? That ship has sailed.

Dubas didn't get the "solid colour" shirt memo at the draft. Must be why he's on the outs

Such a Regina thing to do. Saturday is solid day, but don't tell Kyle.

More like the uniform colours every person going up on stage wore once Steve started sharing the load.
