2016-2017 NHL Thread

Was just reading about how NHL players aren't really making much noise about no Olympic hockey...so I was thinking, why?

1.  The players don't want to show their cards for the next CBA negotiation...don't want to add to the league's hand, so play it cool.
2.  The players liked the World Cup tourney:  they got a split of the revenue, and the schedule is better for them too.
3.  ?

3. Most of them are well-paid adults with demanding careers so their initial reactions of "I'm disappointed but moving on" were truthful?

I wouldn't count on this being a major issue at the next CBA either. Players may get it as a largely meaningless concession but if there's a real fight on it then it's an issue that affects, at most, 1/6th of the PA every four years so it's not all that likely that it's a hill the majority of the members would die on.

I want this.

The NHL isn't going to let players in the minors who are under contract play at the Olympics.  That seems like a colossal Fuck you to the players given that the NHL team isn't paying them money while in the minors (as in juniors or the AHL)

Guys sent back to their junior teams will be eligible to go to the Olympics. It's only those playing in a professional league in North America signed to NHL contracts that can't go. And, guys on two-way contracts playing in the AHL are being paid by their NHL team, I believe - or, at the very least, they negotiated their salary with their NHL team.

This was from yesterday:
15. Aleksander Barkov

I would have liked it if guys on two-way contracts playing in the AHL were given the chance to go if their NHL team loaned them out.

Yeah but you figure it puts NHL execs in a weird situation there where effectively they're giving something their stars really want to their lesser lights. I think the best way to cut off the idea of Ovechkin or Karlsson declaring they want to go is just flat out saying that nobody with a NHL contract can go.

MacKinnon goes 14th. Nathan might go down as one of the most underachieving talents of this generation. Every year I think he's going to take that step into becoming a dominant 70-80 point centre and it just doesn't happen. Watching him at the World Cup last year though you can tell he still has it in him. And he's only turning 22 years old next month. He's really gotta get out of that hell hole in Colorado though.

13 spots left and I can still only think of 12 players who will fill them. Really curious to see how I'm drawing a blank on.

It'll be some order of McDavid, Matthews, Laine, Scheifele, Eichel, Ekblad, Werenski, Murray, Gostisbehere, Draisaitl, Gaudreau, Pastrnak and Kucherov, right? Or do you not see Gostisbehere at all?

Yeah Ghostbear is the one who doesn't fit there for me. I really like him as a player, but that's a very high ranking especially considering some of the defencemen he went ahead of. I said earlier that Vasilevskiy is my best guess right now. Whoever it ends up being I'm very surprised they went ahead of Barkov and MacKinnon.

My guess is that the numbers of his rookie season still carry a lot of weight. I don't know if he can ever legitimately be a 60-ish point defenseman in the league but a guy with that sort of potential is going to have his backers.

You know, they say it's anyone under a NHL contract or whose rights are held by a NHL team so is it possible Hischier or Patrick are in the running?

Nah, I don't think they stand a chance at this point.

No probably not. I'm pretty confident it'll be Gostisbehere. If for no other reason than his omission from even a HM would be pretty hard to understand.
