2016-2017 NHL Thread

Lol Habs.

In other news, Kesler took a bit of a run at Chychrun (I didn't see what was wrong with that), so Max Domi let him know that wasn't kosher (because Kesler?). After discussing it for a couple of spins, they both agreed to partake in a bout of fisticuffs. Domi ended it with one punch. I hate fighting in this sport in general, but I gotta say, that sort of warmed the cochleae of my heart.

Wow, this says a lot about a) how bad the Canucks are and b) how hot the Rangers are right now.

Also where the heck was that last year Grabner?

If I ever meet Grabner, I will shake his cement hand, and thank him for helping us get Matthews (and for having an inept and oddly contagious shooting percentage).

The Canucks point leader is T-139th in league scoring.

Yakupov will be a healthy scratch for the third straight game in STL.

So, you know, it probably wasn't just an Edmonton thing.

OEL received a fine for diving: https://www.nhl.com/news/arizona-coyotes-oliver-ekman-larsson-fined-by-nhl/c-283592708

Video of the play is in the link. I'm very much against diving calls in general so maybe I'm just biased but I really don't understand how they can consider that a dive.

I disagree.  Upon being interfered with (which, was correctly called a penalty) OEL pretty much dropped to his knees instead of fighting through the contact.  He was pushed on the hips and both his feet literally jumped out from underneath him like he had been tripped from behind. It was embellishment 101 IMO.

Coyotes arena problem has been solved!!!!

Well except for that minor financing part???

Don't worry.  Matthews' popularity will help with that and the game of hockey in general in Arizona!

Coyotes record is more than able to offset any Matthews excitement!!

Though from what I was reading of Blues fans online, they didn't really understand why he was being scratched.

Admittedly I haven't watched any Blues games this year and so would defer to them on Yakupov's play vs. the Blues' other bottom of the roster players but whether or not he should be on the 4th line is kind of beside the more relevant point that he is effectively a 4th liner right now.

Two pretty good coaches have come to that conclusion at this point.

Kind of an interesting thing in the Habs/Panthers OT as Galchenyuk broke his stick in the defensive zone and, with his team pinned, went to the bench for a new one.

My instinct is to say you should stay on the ice and play stickless in that situation but honestly I don't know if that's the right move at 3 on 3.

How players try to game NHL's advanced stats
[You] may find examples of players trying to boost their individual statistics.

Corsi measures all shot attempts and has now become the industry standard as a proxy of puck possession. Take a shot on goal, from anywhere on the ice, even if your team is struggling to move the puck into the offensive zone, and it will help your Corsi.

?They don?t get a scoring opportunity and we get the puck back, and all five of my guys get a minus because a guy makes a poor play at the red line,? Trotz said. ?Plus, he and his teammates get rewarded for that.?

A player may get rewarded in contract negotiations as well, using a positive Corsi rating as leverage.

?We have businessmen? in this league and ?they will throw pucks from anywhere to get a better Corsi," Trotz said.

[...]

USA Hockey?s Director of Hockey Operations Jim Johannson said the U.S. National Team Development Program, which trains NHL prospects, has made a decision not to emphasize advanced stats within that program.

?I don?t want kids to think that is their marker,? Johannson said.

Because the program has high school-age players, Johannson said it is far more important that they concentrate on playing the game the way coaches want instead of fretting about another statistic.

Which is pretty stupid, and sounds like Fox News naysaying.

Jeff Bashill isn't that dumb:
Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said he has not noticed players developing any ill-advised habits to inflate their Corsi. But he has his own cautionary tale about advanced statistics.

?I don?t think we have found a good measurable,? Blashill said.

He said he believes Corsi and Fenwick, which counts unblocked shot attempts, can predict success, but not for the reasons people think.

?Shots are more of a byproduct of how you play rather than a driver of performance,? Blashill said.

Blashill said the teams that have good Corsi are those that are outplaying their opponents. That?s why they have more attempts. In other words, teams aren?t dominating because they generate more shot attempts. They have more shot attempts because they are dominating.

One would have hoped that this was something that didn't need to be pointed out.

I kind of get that might be a misconception from some players (all that school they skip), but from management?
