2019-2020 NHL Thread

Friedman is reporting that there won't be a World Cup in 2021, which means it will be at least 6 years since the last best on best World Tournament if they figure out Olympic participation or something.

Rick Bowness just keeps working.  He must be 97 years old by now.

He's 64.
That was my first thought as well. I was like "Rick Bowness!? Wasn't he a coach a long time ago!!?" Lol

Thinking a bit about the leafs, but does anyone know what the record of games in the league is before getting a first win from the backup. I realize it can be difficult to answer considering that some teams roll their backups a lot more, and some don't always have a clear starter.

I don't know what the record is, but I can tell you that Columbus is the only other team to not get a win from their back-up so far this season. New Jersey and Montreal both have just 1 win from their back-up(s).

Well, at least that says something in relation to the rest of the league :) I can't remember this being such an issue even when we were really bad.

Decided to see if any teams last season had yet to get a win from their back-up by this point. New Jersey and Vegas both had yet to get wins from their back-ups. Schneider was 0-5-1 while Subban in Vegas was 0-4. It took New Jersey until December 27th to get their first win from a back-up, and that was via Mackenzie Blackwood who they called up from the AHL. Subban didn't get his first win until December 29th and he went 8-5-2 from that time on.

The 92-93 Sens didn't get a win from their backup until Jan 10, and the 74-75 Capitals only got wins from one goalie.

These are the two worst teams of all time, yes, but, the record is quite clearly the full season.

The 06-07 Devils only got one win from their backup and it was on February 25th.

Admittedly that's a bit of a cheat as Brodeur played 78 games that year but that might be the record for a real team.

Nope, I think I have it. The 08-09 Flames didn't get a win from their backup until April 11th, 2009.

That backup? Curtis McElhinney.

Only 5 starts from their backup, but also only 3 points earned - and they made the playoffs quite handily.

The other 1 win back-up I found was Tyler Moss from the 00-01 Hurricanes. But he got his win pretty early in the season.

One of the crazier things I discovered going down that list though was Bill Ranford playing 77 games in 1995-1996 during a season where he was traded. Edmonton played him almost every single night before he got traded to Boston where he played almost every single night.

Bill Ranford was a machine!

Kovalchuk was placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract today.

LA still eats the cap hits, right? Just no real money paid out after yesterday?s signing bonus?

Yes, only because he's a 35+ contract.

i.e. the Leafs couldn't have done this with Marleau as it would not have solved the problem

Good to see the Senators are trying to kill their best player:
