2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

https://twitter.com/lukefoxjukebox/status/1333780909720555521
Last November, after Toronto's coaching change, Rielly approached Keefe and suggested switching power-play units with the struggling Tyson Barrie, understanding it would be best for team as a whole to get Barrie's offensive game and confidence going.

"He did one of the most selfless things that I've seen," Dubas said.

"That spoke so much the character of Morgan Reilly and everything that he's about. Because as everybody knows, as a defenceman, if you're on the first power play -- especially with the core group that we had there with Tavares, Marner, Nylander and Matthews -- you're probably going to accumulate a lot of points."

"You need players like that, that are always willing to put the team ahead of themselves."

Dressing 7 defencemen would basically be the only way to get a guy like Spezza a breather during the season too since we might only be able to carry 12 forwards on the team (yes, yes, obvious caveat for a possible taxi squad that we still haven't heard anything about).

I reached out Monday to a number of U.S.-based NHL team front office executives, scouts and coaches to get their predicted order of finish for the all-Canadian division. I heard back from 15 of them. Here?s what they had to say.

[...]

For a division that many people view as very competitive, the Leafs ended up getting nine first-place votes out of the 15 respondents. The Flames got four first-place votes and the Habs got two first-place nods.

I feel like an opposing coach can sort of get a pass on calling the Leafs easy to play against in the year where they couldn't beat an emergency goalie.

My favourite part of that is he has the Habs finishing first, based on . . . a good couple weeks at the beginning of a weird playoffs, and because they added a mediocre defenceman, a mediocre backup goalie, a decent 2nd line winger, and a guy who scored 1 goal last season and is coming off a major injury (and hasn't played an NHL game in what will be more than a full year by the time the season starts)? We're just going to ignore that they were the worst team that made the play-in round?

Not that it's super representative, but these are the only US-based Western Conference teams the Leafs have had a losing record to in the past 3 seasons.

2018-2019 Arizona Coyotes
2018-2019 Nashville Predators
2019-2020 Chicago Blackhawks
2017-2018 Colorado Avalanche
2017-2018 St. Louis Blues
2018-2019 St. Louis Blues
2019-2020 Calgary Flames

There are 11 such teams, and over 3 seasons, we're looking at 7 entries out of 33.

This guys a Leaf fan. Why else give them such a low chance unless its part of lighting the fire under them that he speaks about?  8)

It's been just over a calendar year since Keefe got the call to fly out to Arizona

My Swiss is rusty so Thornton has either died or he's on his way to Toronto.

He finishes this tour with Davos with 11 points in 12 games.

LOL. I'm reading his 'start' has died. Which I will assume transfers to a 'finish'.

Make sense seeing he'll have to quarantine for 14 days.

Still very early, but fun to ponder:
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/will-maple-leafs-lose-seattle-kraken-expansion-draft/

Blissfully Exempt: Sandin, Robertson, Liljegren, Mikheyev
Guaranteed to Protect: Tavares (NMC), Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, 1G
Pretty close to guaranteed: Muzzin, Brodie
Bubble: Dermott, Kerfoot, Anderson, Andersen on new contract,  Hyman on new contract (why though), Engvall

There are so many things wrong in that article. Most of the forwards mentioned don't need protection because they're ineligible for the draft. Example, Joey Anderson, Brooks, Boyd all have to play 40 games to be eligible. Dermott, if unsigned, is an RFA and doesn't need protection. Engvall has to play 18 more games. Malgin, 26 games. I'm sure it will get pro rated to the reduced schedule.
As it stands now, it appears Holl, Kerfoot and Engvall will be exposed along with Hutch. There is no way Dubas is signing anyone he wants to keep, unless there's room to protect, from that list until after the Ex Draft. Why would he? Free protection.

* One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

* Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

* One goalie who is under contract in 2021-22 or will be a restricted free agent at the end of his current contract immediately prior to 2021-22. If a team elects to make a restricted free agent goalie available to meet this requirement, that goalie must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the team's protected list.

You're mixing up eligibility and exposure requirements. All of those players you listed have passed the requirements to be eligible for the draft, and so would need protection if the Leafs want to keep them. The numbers you're referencing are in regards to the exposure requirements that you posted on the bottom of your post.

The Leafs are required to expose "Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons". So guys like Anderson/Brooks/Boyd would need to play 40 games this season to meet that requirement, or Engvall would need 18 games (as you said, those GP numbers will of course need to be adjusted because of the shortened season).
