What surprised me quite a bit is that prior to the selection being made they actually didn't speak with him at all since he released his statement requesting not to be drafted. Guess they didn't really care how he felt about that request being ignored.

So, effectively, the Habs need to learn a lesson about respecting consent.

Somewhere, The Irony Gods are doing an epic facepalm.

Well done, sir.  8)

There had been some hope that Knies might go late in the first round. However, a sluggish start to the season, which included a bout with COVID-19, hurt his stock.

That?s the best explanation for how a winger who can skate and score and has the kind of size most NHL teams drool over ? someone Nash describes as a ?specimen? ? remained available until the second day of the draft.

Over the weekend, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas said he was intrigued by Knies? second-half response to his poor start. After getting healthy, he exploded, piling up goals and points to pull back up to nearly a point a game.

He could prove out to be a very good pick, after reading his story.  Fingers crossed.

Hopefully he turns out to be just what the Leafs Knies.

I hope so, but if I had a dime for every sunshine-blowing story I've read about Leafs prospects (and I'm sure it's true of prospects in general), then I'd have 5 or 10 bucks.

Canadiens getting a lot of backlash, including from the PM.

Montreal wouldn't have drafted him without speaking with him and his family about it.

Really?  Man...OK then, well that's pretty indefensible.

He could refuse to sign though couldn't he?

Like Lindros and Quebec. Or can you not go back into the draft now?

He could refuse but Mon owns his rights for 2 years. My understanding is any unsigned drafts can only go back in the draft of they are under 20. All 20 year Olds are UFAs.

Didn't realise it was 2 years even if he didn't sign.

That really is a dick move by Montreal.

Apparently Geoff Molson is going to release a statement detailing how the team will handle Mailloux.

I guarantee there will be a lot of "zero tolerance" or "high standards" that will ultimately boil down to nothing of substance. I wonder also if they maybe say that they won't sign him "until he proves his maturity" or something.

I'm sure this being released at the height of the free agent frenzy is a pure coincidence.

And somehow it says even less than I thought it would.

You know what gets me? The idea that they gave him a "second chance". If he had worked hard and done what he said, proven that he learned from what he did and actually put in the work to become a different person then drafting him next year, like he requested, that would have been giving him a "second chance". This is giving him a first chance. This is saying he should face no consequences whatsoever for his actions.

I mean we say that the people whining about "cancel" culture are really just whining about any behaviour having any consequences but this is just the best example of how even the mildest inconvenience, waiting a year to be drafted like a lot of guys do, is going to be likened to witch burnings by the people whose primary interest is in seeing that absolutely no changes whatsoever are made to systems that protect the entrenched power of the privileged.

At this point does anyone believe that they aren't going to be involved in giving him detailed training recommendations through the remainder of the offseason and into next season.  He misses out on prospect camp and the first week or two of training camp but its complete bullshit that they are just going to ignore his development entirely.

Either own up to it or don't.  Draft him and say "yes he did bad things but we feel that nit was an isolated event that requires reparation but did not flag our ethics/conduct enough to not draft" or don't draft him.  This is basically saying "oh, people don't like it so yeah we feel bad for that".
