I don't think there's anything bold at all from the Avs. Rant wasn't going to sign for a number they wanted him at so they had no choice. You can't let an elite player walk for nothing when you can get quality back for that player. It's Tre's job to know what Marner's ask is and if he doesn't want to tell or says he's going to UFA, then he needs to do everything he can to move him. It's that simple.Couple of bold teams there...gutsy moves.
I don't get the feeling that Tre would be this bold on the Marner file.
It's important to note Marner has a full no-movement clause. Rantanen does not. He only has a 9-team no-trade list.
So it's logically simple, but practically extremely difficult. I feel Marner's either signing (which I expect) or walking.

And just to add...Rant's numbers aren't very good away from Mac. In fact they're pretty terrible. A few examples...at 5v5...Rants xGF% without Mac is 36.5%. Mac's is 53.67% without Rant. HDCF% without Mac is 35%. Mac without Rant is 58.5%. The Avs look at this and think he wants more then Mac? Not a chance.
There's risk with every move. This is different because they really had no choice. If the Leafs were in the same position, I'd hope they'd trade the player. Again, you can't let guys like Marner/Rant/Willy walk for nothing. Avs got a good return for a pending UFA despite being handcuffed by contract demands.I'd suggest that moving on from a 100 point player while you're in the middle of a wild card fight is a pretty risky move because you're disrupting your team composition at a critical juncture here.
Yeah I was gonna say he's definitely getting 12.5-13.Marner is going to re-sign. All this prelude stuff is just sound and fury. They'll bring him him in high twelves.
My son’s good friend is tied into the Leaf organization and was at a party a few weeks back.
He was talking to Marner’s brother, for what it’s worth he said Mitch won’t take 13M
He is looking for 15M

Berube connection (played with him for 2.5 seasons but post-Cup era in STL). Has size and speed. Scored 26 goals and 42 points last season but struggled this season. Yeah I wouldn't be shocked if the Leafs checked him out.I think the Leafs will throw a contract this way
Can't imagine he'd cost all that much in terms of AAV either. Certainly worth a phone call.Berube connection (played with him for 2.5 seasons but post-Cup era in STL). Has size and speed. He's a $4.5m cap hit at the moment, and he's walking away from $3.6m real money next season...so it must really be untenable.Berube connection (played with him for 2.5 seasons but post-Cup era in STL). Do we really need another LW though? I'd rather spend the space on C.
So have our top 2 C's though, right? And now we have Holmberg playing with Nylander! All our LW have spent time on IR
It'd create a logjam on wing for sure. But he's a free asset who would come in here presumably on a cheap contract and is a prototypical Berube forward. Even if he's just a 4th liner who bumps Dewar out of the line-up when he's healthy that could be a plus. If he really clicks in the middle-6 maybe he makes another winger a little more expendable in a possible trade for a C.Do we really need another LW though? I'd rather spend the space on C.
