2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Interesting note about the Islanders GM/President search from Arthur Staple of the Athletic:

I had discounted Leafs president Brendan Shanahan in my update earlier this week but have since been told not to be so fast to dismiss him. Shanahan’s contract expires June 30 and the Leafs are trying to reach the Eastern Conference final for the first time since 2002. If they get past the Panthers, that might make a Shanahan return in Toronto more likely. But if not and the MLSE board is willing to move on, there could be interest from the Islanders. Collins and Shanahan worked together at the NHL for years.

Shanahan is probably not a dual-role option for the Islanders, so ownership would have to make the call on whether it’s worth shelling out for Shanahan plus a GM — current Leafs special assistant Shane Doan, maybe? — and also whether the Leafs’ timeline for making a call on Shanahan works with the Isles’ timeline, already 23 days into their search.

A long shot, but not off the table.

Shanahan lives on my street and kids go to same school. I dont know him personally. But very very happy to see him go.

From my reverse engineering of everything....after his initial years with the franchise....his tenure with the Leafs has been just a big boondoggle for him.

Responsibility for squandering the best drafted talent (which he duly gets credit for drafting) this team has ever had in its history flows to the very top: Rogers and Shanahan. And Rogers is relying on Shanahan to bring the hockey sense. Yet there has been so much torture from non sensical hockey decisions.... many of which the members of this Forum have listed and continue to beat their heads over year after year. And lack of results, which the history books will reflect.

Tim Leiwecke was hired by Rogers and said "Plan the Parades". He hired Shanahan for the Leafs and Masai for the Raptors. One of them delivered all the way. The other is currently at a best of 2 wins in round two.

I concur with Cabber24...... "Bye".

Interesting note about the Islanders GM/President search from Arthur Staple of the Athletic:

Unless the Leafs made a deep run to the Conference Finals or better, the writing was on the wall for Shanahan. He knows his time is up. Kept the core together long enough to disappoint even the most hardened of fans and what do they have to show for it? The Shanaplan was a lie.

You all know my stance on this core and how long I've begged for it to be blown up. What really pisses me off the most is how finally it may happen but the way it may happen. Marner supposedly was approached earlier this year to waive if true to try and land Rantanen. He didn't waive yet rumours of him looking elsewhere in FA. If thats the case he can walk and f off. He could have went to Carolina who arguably have a better team than us and maybe went further and then decided his fate come summer. Instead he screwed us and I get it that's his right but after being handsomely overpaid by the Leafs for years he bent them over. Great player to watch but only in the first 82 games. He may win a cup with another team but I can't see him being the main reason as nothing will change come spring with his houdini act.

It's not his job to do the Leafs any favours by being traded. He earned that NMC, just like Sundin did back in the day when he refused to waive it. Marner didn't screw anyone by not waiving and to think that is ridiculous and playing the let's blame Marner for everything vibe. I personally don't care if he re-signs or not but I won't be blaming him and him alone for all that ails this team. All of the "core" haven't been good enough. The bottom 6 hasn't been good enough and neither has Berube. They ALL have a hand in this but they can right the ship starting tonight.

Marner is the favorite whipping boy but none of them are delivering right now. Matthews has an excuse; the others, no.
It's not accidental that Marner is the favourite whipping boy, though. While none of them have performed up to their abilities in late series games (other than Nylander), Marner's performance has been the most noticeably poor. Between his pitiful point production to making egregious giveaways, he's been the worst of the core players in the biggest games. He's struggled to adapt his game from what works in the regular season to what works in the playoffs - constantly going back to plays that only work when you have time and space. When the games need quick decision making, he still tries to slow things down.

Exactly. This isn't all about 16 but apparently it's all his fault.
Not once have I said it's all on Marner. I've blamed the core for a long tome all of them. JT not so much as he was signed as a free agent and is older. I've said trade Matthews so not a fan of his also the way he's disappeared come April. Nylander has had his moments but of the young 3 probably been the best in the playoffs.

Where did I mention you? I didn't.

Yes they all have that right but man they've treated him well and paid him handsomely from day 1. If there is an inclination you might move on why wouldn't you waive. It's bullshit. The team asking you to waive is a tell tale sign they might want to move in another direction. What does it affect him? Come end of season he could of chosen where he wanted to go. Maybe even back to Toronto he would have that choice. Did Rantanen waive his NMC? I'm sure he did. Why is Marner any different.

Again Marner owes them nothing. He's playing with his friends in 34 and 88 and his family was getting ready to welcome their first child. Uprooting the family isn't an option..... and Rants didn't waive anything. He had a 9 team NTC.
