24/7 Red Wings/Maple Leafs Episode One Thread

Lupul looks so much more handsome in a suit.  :D

Phaneuf not so much.  :P

Liked the part where, after the tough 3-1 loss to the Kings, Carlyle tries to stay upbeat in the dressing room after the game, in addressing the players.

So far, so good.  Am enjoying watching it.  Gives you a glimpse into the life of a pro athlete -- the bus rides, the things in-between, etc., etc.  Not that none of us knew that, but seeing it on television in a docu-episode stands it out.

The whole sequence with his suits and his wife and his car made me cringe.  I think they definitely took some liberties with the editing but if it was me (the captain of the team with the highest ticket prices in the league) I wouldn't be giving tours of my walk-in closet full of expensive clothes or my Bentley.

Why not?

And Bow-Tie Phaneuf looked like an uber-tool.

You'd have them film you at Value Village or driving a Pinto to work?

hahaha Phaneuf could find a cure for cancer and still most would hate him and find things to rip about him

It's funny, though, that the players that people say that about always tend to be players who never accomplish anything.

Your Dion hate is starting to get a bit ridiculous.

People rip about Crosby constantly, and there isn't much he hasn't accomplished.

My apologies, should have said criticism.

I get your point about Pittsburgh fans; I'll concede that.

I think your point applies to both sides of the argument though. Meaning, is the criticism of his play amplified as a result of frustration over the team's lack of success? If the team's success was better, would criticism of Phaneuf subside,  assuming his play doesn't change at all? Would your criticism of him wane?

To be fair, although I enjoy the Phaneuf digression, my point there was less Phaneuf-specific and more just responding to something I've seen a lot of over the last few years that kind of gets to me. "Burke could win 3 Stanley Cups in a row and people would criticize the way he held the cup" or "Phil Kessel could win game seven of the finals with a hat trick in overtime and people would still hate the trade" and the like.

But, and this is why Crosby is an interesting figure here. I've long said that he's a guy who's conclusively proven that if a Canadian hockey fan doesn't like him then there's literally nothing he can do to get in their good books. He reached the absolute pinnacle of International hockey, scoring maybe the most significant goal in the country's history of international play, and some people still don't like him.

So before we start equating guys like Phaneuf or Kessel or Burke(well, not Burke) to Crosby in that sense, I don't know, maybe let's see them have some concrete accomplishments to knock down.

But as to your specific questions regarding Phaneuf:

1. Yes. When things are going well, nobody looks for people to blame. Well, unless things are going well but the shot differentials are poor.
2. Yes, see above.
3. Yes, but only because I'd have to assume that if the team achieved any measure of true success that Phaneuf would be relegated to a role I feel suited him better which really makes up the entirety of my "ridiculous" criticism of him. That said, I'd be pretty happy if the team was winning in spite of him too.

A coaching change would make for compelling television.

They'd have to focus on the Leafs for the full hour instead of random Red Wings guys at a bar.  ;D

*Eventually the conversation shifted to coach Randy Carlyle..."

"What are you guys ordering?"

"I think I'll get the fish.  Speaking of fish, I don't feel at all awkward and forced when I say to you, my fellow teammates, that I enjoy playing for our head coach Randy Carlyle."

If it's Fraser, McLaren, McClement, Smithson, and Orr at the table I'm not sure that would be scripted.

I'm also not sure it would be quite so eloquent.

I was thinking more along the lines of a bunch guys talking like Archie Comic's Moose.

"So, daaaaa, I really like our coach."

"Ya. He's . . . uhhhh . . . really smart."

"He's the bestest."

Leafs and Detroit won last night! Maybe it won't be the horror the story I thought it was going to be.

Its to bad Zetterberg and Howard are likely out for the big game.

I am going and am starting to get really pumped! The experience is going to be epic.
