AHL playoff rosters & the 4 call-up rule

Worth remembering: A player must be on an AHL roster at 3 p.m. ET tomorrow to be able to play in that league after.

Something to keep an eye on in the next 24-ish hours. It's going to be interesting to see how the Leafs maneuver their roster to ensure guys like Leivo/Leipsic are eligible to play for the Marlies in the playoffs.

Also keep in mind that the team will only have 4 non-emergency call-ups after the deadline.

They may have already started the planning for this:

The #leafs have assigned Colin Greening to the AHL Marlies.

Which doesn't make much sense to me, but we'll have to see what else they do.

Yeah. On it's own, that's a curious move. Leivo/Leipsic going to the Marlies would have made sense, but Greening? Have to imagine it's part of something more.

You'd think they would want Greening on the Leafs to take up one of the 20-roster spots so they could send Leivo/Leipsic down. Because as it stands right now it might actually be tricky for the Leafs to hit that minimum if they send those two and Percy down. But who knows right now.

He was, which would mean either Bozak or Michalek are ready to be re-activated.

If one or both of them are ready to be re-activated (at least on paper) then that would help. They'll probably also avoid putting Froese on the IR until they absolutely need to so that'll help us artificially increase the roster size.

Stalock will likely be with the Leafs until the deadline, so that will allow the team to keep both Sparks and Bibeau eligible for the AHL playoffs. I'd imagine that played a part in him being included in the deal. Ben Smith could also get called up, maybe even Cowen too if the Leafs don't deal him.

Kadri, Komarov, Grabner, Holland, Arcobello, Winnik, Froese, Boyes, Bozak, Michalek, Smith (11)

Gardiner, Rielly, Hunwick, Marincin, Corrado, Cowen (6)

Bernier, Stalock (2)

So after sending Leivo, Leipsic, Percy, and Sparks down that would bring us to 19 players (assuming PAP is traded of course). Need one more. Maybe the Leafs will bring in another warm body in the PAP trade, or maybe they'll recall Greening if they can't.

If they are doing this before 3pm they are basically saying they've graduated.

They won't play in the playoffs for the Marlies.

This is your new look Toronto Maple Leafs folks.

I wouldn't say that. If they are playing tonight the Leafs will want them to get a practice in before hand. They could still make a paper transaction to make them eligible for the playoffs and then bring them back.

Why can't they play in the playoffs for the Marlies?

That's a good point, the only reason to do this before 3pm is that they want them to practice.

The 4 call-up rule post deadline has been abolished, right?

I have no idea what the rules are for AHL callups/playoffs, but I'm sure Lou, Dubas and company will ensure the Marlies have a good roster to take a run at the AHL title.  Part of the plan was to have the kids taste success so hopefully the Marlies can go all the way.

No, it's still around, but, with all the injured players and such, the Leafs can likely get away with classifying some of the moves as emergency recalls.
