AHL playoff rosters & the 4 call-up rule

I never really understood the big deal with a jersey number.  The number becomes something depending on how the player performs IMO.

I've never understood this either. So archaic.

Like, the #29 is an amazing number synonymous with Felix Potvin but it only is because Potvin was inarguably the best goalie of the 1990s.

Relevant Maple Leafs hockey will be welcome for a change.

It will and it won't. I mean, do we really want to start cheering for wins and have these kids start to turn heads now? I'm not saying they're gonna turn the team around right away, but you would have to think they will be playing with everything they have to show they belong in the big league. At this point in the game, I don't want anything to upset the tank and possibly our only shot at a first overall pick for this entire rebuild.

Even if they played their absolute best I doubt they would do enough to get the Leafs any significant number of wins.  I mean, if McDavid can't even do it...

I'm still a little confused here.

Leipsic, Arcobello, Leivo and Greening sent to the Marlies.

Nylander, Kapanen, Soshnikov, Hyman & Smith to the Leafs.

So who from the first group comes back to the Leafs before 3 pm as they shuffle?

Arcobello and Greening? Smith probably stays on the Leafs roster.

That would still leave Leivo, Leipsic, Hyman, Kapanen, Soshnikov and Nylander on the Marlies to facilitate their involvement in the AHL playoffs.

So that's six names and you can only make four non-emergency recalls.

Those emergency recalls can also only be made when your roster drops below 20 healthy skaters, so who is the odd man out?

It's probably best to just wait a few hours to find out ;)

I'm guessing they spend the rest of the season looking at Nylander/Kapanen/Hyman/Sosh and use emergency call-ups on guys like Arcobello and Greening when need be.

Also that doesn't solve how they get Sparks and Percy eligible. Anyway, we'll see.

Probably not worth worrying about until the dust settles after the deadline and everything.

I'm not as convinced. We have to remember the Marlies team this season is probably on par or even better than the Leafs team. You add the core of that sqaud to the Leafs and get Babcock to work his magic on them a bit and you have a very hungry young talented squad that wants to perform on the big stage for the first time in their careers. Will they be good enough to play .500 hockey? Probably not, but even if they pull off a half dozen wins between now and the end of the season, that has the potential to mess up the tank.

You guys are right.

It could mean Boyes, Grabner and PAP could all be gone by 3 pm creating the spots, we shall see.

And there still could be a shock value trade involving Komarov or Gardiner too.

I love Komarov and Gardiner playing best hockey under Babs.
Komarov is all work and and example for the younger players. You have to keep a guy like this around in my mind.

I say if St. Louis or Anahiem offers you a first for him because they need help on the wings and want to compete against LA or Chicago, you have to get him on a plane.  His value will probably never be higher than it is this year.

Kapanen and Leipsic were both loaned back to the Marlies today, both were emergency call-ups so we'll likely see some bodies back for tomorrow's game.

When Reims was traded, Lou said he wanted to get Sparks and Bibeau into the show and see what they can do.
With all the call ups how can he bring up Bibeau without an injury to either Sparks or Bernie?

Kevin McGran cleared up how the Leafs used their call-ups on deadline day: http://www.thestar.com/sports/breakaway_blog/2016/03/clarifying-the-callups-plus-another-outdoor-game-that-doesn-t-include-the-leafs.html

Nylander, Sparks, and Carrick were the ones who were officially called up after the 3pm deadline. They will all be eligible to play for the Marlies in the playoffs, and they represent 3 of the 4 recalls allowed by the league post-deadline.

Smith, Hyman, Soshnikov, Leipsic, and Kapanen were all recalled on an emergency basis after 3pm. So they're all eligible for the Marlies playoffs as well and will have to be loaned back to the AHL as injured players become healthy (as we saw with Leipsic and Kapanen).

Thanks, Carlton.

Were there any callups during the day to get those guys onto the practice roster the morning of the deadline? I tried looking through the AHL Transaction log, but it only shows the single call up/loan for those guys.
