For Johnsson, probably. For us fans, probably not.

I mean, yes and no I suppose. As much as I like Johnsson the odds of him coming in and scoring 50 points, or I mean even 40 points in his rookie season is pretty slim. So at least this way the team gets a better look at him for a year and they'll be in a position to negotiate a longer term deal after just 1 year of NHL service. If they negotiated a longer term deal after 2 years of NHL service he could have had more evidence to justify a more expensive deal.
Personally speaking I would have tried to get him at a reasonable rate for 4+ years, but if the options were only 1 or 2 then I think 1 is the safer bet.

Same, so i'm a bit disappointed. I'd have liked them gamble a bit on Johnsson... he fits the mould of what the team is building.. skilled, fast, and can play pretty much anywhere in the lineup. I was hoping for a 4 year deal at about 1.8.

Yeah but would he take that? I probably wouldn't if I were him.

Which is why signing him to a 4 year deal at a pretty low salary really wouldn't have been much of a gamble on the Leafs part and probably wasn't very attractive for him.
I like Johnsson but he's another guy who I feel like should be somewhat disposable if any of the Leafs' prospect depth on wing comes through. My only real regret here is they couldn't sign him to a multi-year deal so that if he does go and have a really solid season he'd be a pretty valuable trade chip.

Yes me too, but do not underestimate the Swedish Dude.Coco-puffs said:CarltonTheBear said:Frank E said:CarltonTheBear said:Almost certainly the best decision for Johnsson.

I do feel like 35-40 pts is realistic for him. Mostly because they seem to already be playing him on the PP in the high slot and I don't think they are going to change that. That assumes, of course, he's playing with Kadri and not on the 4th line at 5v5. That output pretty much got Brown a 2M deal with only 1 full year of service.
I do see your point though, if he has 2 seasons of that production he may be worth more on that next deal BUT our cap crunch is next year. I would have rather have given him a 1Mx2 deal now.

That's not really on the other hand. If Johnsson turns out to be a good player that'd be fine and dandy but it doesn't change what situation the Leafs are in with regards to the big 4 forwards they need to pay. The better that Johnsson is, the harder it'll be to keep him.
