OTOH he could be just the kind of guy who breaks out a la Kucherov. (OK, very likely not to that level ... but he's got the tools and has shown he can score in Sweden and the Marlies.)

That's not really on the other hand. If Johnsson turns out to be a good player that'd be fine and dandy but it doesn't change what situation the Leafs are in with regards to the big 4 forwards they need to pay. The better that Johnsson is, the harder it'll be to keep him.

I meant with respect to being somewhat disposable.

Right and again, that's true even if he's a good player. If you have 4 forwards taking up 40-50% of your cap the odds of being able to keep a fifth good forward long term are pretty small. Especially with the Leafs where they have guys like Kadri and Kapanen who they'd also like to keep. Unfortunately the cap means you have to be willing to move on from guys like Johnson even if he blossoms.

The Kucherov comparison is ridiculous but he does have the potential to be a decent contributor. The Leafs will just need to bring up other guys with similar potential. Given that they have a lot of prospects on the wing, that shouldn't be too much to ask.

Heh, Kucherov becoming Kucherov was ridiculous.  Until he did it.

Leafs took Tyler Biggs and Stuart Percy before Kucherov. Good times good times.

Kucherov was a 2nd round pick who scored 65 points when he was 21. Becoming a big time NHL player from the 2nd round isn't that unlikely and progressing from that sort of young start isn't either.

There's really nothing that connects the two players.

At this point he has a better chance of becoming a furnace.

But it's within the Realm of Possibility?!

The real question will be if we even need Johnsson to be Kucherov once Marancin has turned into Chara, Holl turned into Bobby Orr and Adam Brooks has become some sort of Wayne Gretzky/Giant Lizard hybrid.

St. Louis took Dmitrij Jaskin, Detroit took Ryan Sproul, Pittsburgh took Scott Harrington, Nashville took Magnus Hellberg, NY Islanders took Johan Sundstrom, Boston took Alexander Khokhlachev, Phoenix took Alexander Ruuttu...

Yeah, Some 2nd round picks end up being stars and most teams take players ahead of these stars.

I hate to be critical but you guys are not visionaries.

re the whole ?maybe he?ll be kucherov? ... of course no one thinks he will but for fun I looked at the top 10 scorers in the league at their draft position: you?ve got guys drafted #1 overall (4 guys) and guys drafted 2, 5, 5, 11, 22 and then Kucherov .. 2nd rounders dont often happen ... when was the last kucherov-level forward drafted in the 2nd round?

Before Kucherov, the last forward to be picked outside of the 1st round to finish in the top 10 of scoring would be Brad Marchand who did it last year. Then, the year before that, you'd have Benn, Pavelski, Gaudreau and Panarin if you'd count him. The year before that it's Benn and Jiri Hudler.

So there's always a couple of guys like that in the mix.
