Armstrong bought out

Well that's a little shocking. Armstrong actually thanked the fans before these reports came out today:

Colby Armstrong ‏@armdog

Thanks to the leaf nation for the support over the last couple seasons. Although I had tough luck thanks for everything. ‪#lotsleftinme

I really didn't think anything of that tweet at first.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Colby Armstrong is being bought out by TOR. Will be on unconditional waivers at 12 noon ET.

Did not see that one coming. Free's up $2M in cap space this season.

According to CapGeek it will be a $1mil cap hit for the next two seasons.

Him and Tucker eating $2M for nothing. Hope it works out.

I still think he's a lot better of a player than he was the last two injury marred seasons.  I guess that's 2 million dollars more Burke has to throw at someone tomorrow.  Prust, maybe?

And another mil spent on absolutely nothing.

Surprising the Leafs couldn't dump him on another team for a low draft pick or something. Maybe no interest.

My guess is the rash of injuries he's had over the last couple seasons scared teams away.

I guess it's how you look at it. We were spending $3m on Colby who was bringing next to nothing due to injuries. Now we save $2 of that 3 million.

That doesn't sit well with me at all, I know it's not my money and it's not a fun thing for a player but I'd rather they bury him. That lingering cap hit coupled with Tucker's just blows. Maybe there's some truth to cba changes and burying contracts, maybe it's about 'character' and remaining player friendly so I'll hold off completely condemning this on the face of it but it rubs me the wrong way right now.

Good luck to Colby, great guy.

Or maybe they're planning on sending Lombardi to the Marlies and want to limit the number of big money contracts they have down there taking up roster spots that should be filled by younger guys. The $1M on the cap this year isn't a big deal - there's not much to spend on this summer, but, it could be an issue next summer.

That's a bit surprising. Bad Business Burke - no wonder the Leafs are having a hard time luring FAs.
Quite the opposite actually, players tend to look more favorably on buyouts than being buried in the minors. It shows that the GM cares about the person as well as the player.
