Barb Underhill the Leafs New Skating Instructor

For the most part of the season, when the stupid penalties where cut off, most night they look like a holiday on ice event anyway (read: no hitting, no truculence, just speed and nice plays)... now they have the right assistant coach to do it.

WIGWAL it was Underhill who worked with Tavares as well.  I will give her 2 months into season and if d-men can't get shots through from the point it's open season on her!!!

Tavares worked with power skating instructor Dawn Braid.

If she had been working with Schenn prior to this season then she can go frack herself.

His skating is horrific.

Go out and give the skating school Tavares has been working with a blank cheque to whip their skating into shape.

It says that in the article she was also working with Tavares.

Article may be wrong. I can't find any "official" site that says she worked with Tavares. The Leafs own press release says:

"Since 2007, Underhill has worked as the Skating Coach for the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm. She has also served as a Skating Consultant with the Anaheim Ducks and New York Rangers since 2010, and the Tampa Bay Lightning since 2011."

According to that article she was also the Leafs skating instructor...

Dawn worked with the Toronto Maple Leafs as their skating instructor from 2005 to the summer of 2008 where she instructed alongside Paul Maurice, Keith Acton, Greg Gilbert, and Dallas Eakins. With the Leafs she ran the skating portion of three Leaf Prospect Camps enhancing player?s skills and preparing them with skating skills required for the NHL. While with the Leafs Dawn ran an on ice skating and conditioning program for various Toronto pro players during the off season and during the season she assisted Strength Coach Matt Nichol in the on ice rehab of the injured players, analyzing, breaking down and rebuilding the player?s stride.

I wonder if part of her mandate is to teach Schenn when to not chase forwards up the wall or into corners.

Does anybody remember defenseman Garrett Clarke who was invited to the prospects tourney as an unsigned invitee.  He broke his hand in a fight and was all kinds of nasty during that tourney.  He has bounced around the Q from team to team due to his knack for getting suspended and playing dirty.

I had his dad in my dental chair as a new patient the other day.  We spoke at length about his son and apparently Garrett had told his dad that  Schenn was a terrible skater and that he could skate better then him in Peewee ;).  He also told me that Burke loved his son and told him to go back to the Q after his hand healed and maybe they would talk after the season.

So basically the only reason this is "news" is due to the fact that people have heard of Barbera Underhill before. Seems figure skaters helping hockey players isn't anything that new.

Thought I'd provide another link.  The Youtube clip is pretty good.  Not as long winded. :)

Brian Boyle discusses Barb Underhill;

I was wondering if that was who she was.

She obviously didn't show Boyle how to fight back when attacked or how to take a clean hit though.  :D

He seems to speak highly of her right there but I think you do need to point out that Boyle went from 21 goals and 35 points in 11 goals and 26 points after this rebuild of his skating.

But they met before the 2010-11 season, so she would have been working with him prior to his breakout season too.

So we have concluded that too much barb is a bad thing, but in small doses she should be fine.
