Bernier traded to Anaheim

Washington effectively paid the Leafs to take Laich off their hands and by all accounts they thought he was a stand up fellow.

Although you would hope that a goalie who has similar stats to Andersen who cost a 2nd+1st would be worth something more than cap space clearance.  It's not like 4M is insurmountable when it comes to cap hit.  I mean, I would sooner have seen them move out Hunwick and one of Michalek/Greening to make up cap space.

I'm not sold on doubling down on Andersen as the proven goalie of the future.  Although I do understand that Bernier's value isn't likely to be huge if he only plays 15 games leading up to the deadline.

I mean, sure. I absolutely would hope that but between coming off a bad season and not having a contract anyone trading for him would be in a tricky spot about what to potentially do with him going forward.

I think the Leafs didn't do great with Andersen so you can only expect that to set the market so much. I mean, I'd rather have Elliott quite frankly at his price/asset cost.

So pretty safe to say nothing.

We really need a clever acronym for #DubasGMAugust2016. DGMA doesn't really cut it.

These aren't acronyms, but I'm workshopping #FreeDubas or #UnleashtheDubas

To Anaheim: Bernier, 2016 1st (Sam Steel), 2017 mid-2nd, $2M in salary savings
To Toronto: Andersen, 4.15M cap space, impossible 2017 pick

Yeah, after seeing that, Andersen's post game interviews should probably be really enlightening lectures on post-colonial Africa and international monetary policy.

Calling this a trade is really a case of putting lipstick on a pig.

I would expect they must have tried waivers first and got no takers. This is nothing more than giving Bernier away so I can only conclude they were desperate to do so.

This is the coda to the "let's trade for a goalie" trilogy of moves that began with Raycroft and Toskala.

It is the most immediate proof underlining my concerns regarding the acquisition of Andersen.

I hope the fourth time is the charm and not further evidence of the definition of insanity.

As others have said, this was 100% a part of the original Andersen trade. It just wasn't included at that time because of Bernier's signing bonus. Anaheim needed a back-up goalie who could play at least 25-35 games because of Gibson's inexperience and Bernier fills that need very well for them. I think that Anaheim is happy to have him.

The Leafs get a 1st if Bernier is made visiting chair of political science at the University of the Witwatersrand.

I'm not sure my dad's alma mater would be able to withstand that.

Aside from the fact that neither team has announced it as such and going with the prevailing supposition, it is still a gift. At the very least we should have gotten something (normally I would say more but really I means anything) in return.

As announced, the Andersen deal was within the realm of reasonability, still unnecessary (premature) in my opinion but so be it, but this side bar (if indeed it is part of the Andersen transaction) takes the Andersen trade out of that classification, which is to say, we way overpaid.

We are going to stumble along through next season with or without Andersen and with or without Bernier. There is no way this team makes the playoffs short of a miracle so why pay more salary for the same result?

I have not generally been critical of current management but in this instance, I believe they may an error.

The real issue for me is the fact that they wasted the first round draft pick.  They could have just signed another goalie without sacrificing the pick.

Considering they unloaded Bernier, however, I suppose I can live with that.

So basically Bernier has to be the starter of a Stanley Cup winning team or traded to become the starter of an SC finalist team for the Leafs to get a 2nd or third rounder respectively.  Not even making it to the SCF is good enough if he remains a Duck.

Guys and gals, I think we were screwed out of that 2nd or 3rd rounder from the beginning.

So if not part of the Andersen trade, Bernier to Anaheim realistically sounds more like this:

"The Leafs GIVE Bernier to Anaheim after paying out 2M in signing bonuses.  Anheim now agrees to absorb the full cap hit as a condition of the gift."

If Bernier can identify 3 popular world leaders, we get a 4th round pick.

Trick question, as there are probably only one or two world leaders who can be considered popular.

In that case he would probably name Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton.
