Black & Blue Leafs - Injury Report

Captain Canuck said:
So why did Carlyle say that he had a headache? A headache is a symptom of a possible concussion on a blow to the head/neck area. It seems that we are getting conflicting reports on the status of Reimer and hopefully the situation is handled with his best interests in mind.

To paraphrase a quote generally attributed to Sigmund Freud, sometimes a headache is just a headache. He took a knee to the head last night. Of course he had a headache. But, that was last night. This morning, the headache was gone and he was symptom free. I'm not sure where you're getting conflicting reports from.

All three are forgettable players but are also better players than Orr.

Help can't come until Friday at the earliest, they'll probably all be called back up tomorrow or Tuesday. They were just sent back down to give the Marlies some help, and maybe save a few bucks under the cap.

All three players do not need to clear waivers. And everyone on this site should get use to Orr playing with RC, because he is not going anywhere.

Oh, we're all used to it. That doesn't mean we're going to stop commenting, criticizing, complaining or pointing out how poor a choice it is.

If you have to have a goon on your squad (I'm not convinced you do, but Carlyle thinks so) Orr is better than most.  The trouble is that he's getting far more minutes, and at important times in the games, than guys like him should.

The thing is, that's just not true. There are a number of guys in the league who are predominantly fighters that actually contribute in other ways. Some like Konopka, for instance, is an excellent faceoff guy and brings everything else Orr does. Thornton in Boston is a very good penalty killer. Dorsett isn't an offensive black hole. And, so on. All Orr really can do is fight and, when he can catch up to guys, hit. He's a poor skater, poor shooter, poor passer and has been poor defensively since coming to the Leafs. He isn't capable of playing more than 4 or 5 minutes a night without being a liability, whereas a number of the other face punchers in the league can.

Without consulting a list of the league's tough guys, I'll just say that he's better than you give him credit for IMO and will reiterate my opinion that he ranks better than most (not saying among the very best).  I've seen him score the odd pretty goal, for example, and seen him create some good screens.  His skating is decent for an enforcer.

I agree with you that he's not good for more than 4-5 minutes/game before trouble sets in.  That's the crux of the problem.  If Carlyle really thinks he needs to save a roster spot for a guy who's main job is fighting, then he should be beating the bushes to find the next Tie Domi.  As infuriating as he could be at times, he was a legit hockey player in addition to being a pugilist.

Orr's not even the best "enforcer" in the organization. I mean, Broll and Bodie are both fighters as well and based on ice-time even Carlyle would suggest that they are better hockey players. Both are averaging more ice-time this season than Orr is and they are typically playing on the 3rd line while Orr is on the 4th. And yet when this team becomes healthy everybody knows that it's going to be Orr keeping his job while Bodie and Broll lose theirs. How does that make any sense?

That I'd agree with you on. If the Leafs had a Tie Domi/Bob Probert type instead of a pure face puncher like Orr, there would be a lot less complaining.

Carlyle gave an update on the injured Leafs today. It sounds like everybody is right around on schedule.

McLaren is eligible to return to the line-up on Friday against Columbus, and will likely be ready to play Friday or Saturday.

Kulemin and Fraser are eligible to return on October 29 when the Leafs head to Western Canada for 3 games in 5 days. Carlyle said that it's still a little too early to say for sure if they'll be ready by then, but they will begin practicing soon and should be cleared around that time.

One of the Ducks' announcers said they talked to one of the Leafs staff before the game and that Kulemin is already practicing with the team (?) and while it's not 100% certain he is expected to be in the lineup at some point next week. So pretty much on schedule.

Good stuff. We could really use him right now.

Agreed.

Also glad to hear that Clarkson has recovered from his brain injury (Leroy Jenkins Disease), and will be ready to play against the CBJ Friday.

First game back, I bet he storms over the boards to help a teammate after a whistle and gets another 10 games.

LOFL!!

I had to google Leroy Jenkins (it's actually Leeroy Jenkins)??. and this is especially funny to me, because my daughter got a puppy earlier this year and named him Leeroy Jenkins. LOL! It so suits him :)

But there are plenty of people who need their face punched in; hence the need for a roster spot or two to a face puncher.

If he did that he still wouldn't face the same criticism from certain media members that Kessel does.

Which is, of course, why the Leafs haven't had a fight since they played Nashville. There's very very few people who need their face punched in - especially on the better teams in the league.
