Blue Jackets @ Leafs - Jan. 8th, 7:00pm - TSN4, Fan 590

It looked like Rielly was hit in open ice without the puck in OT with no call.

Agreed that puck was propelled by skate. More or less a stick deflection once in motion.

So, it looks like they've adjusted that rule recently. If it hits the stick in between, it's a good goal - which feels stupid. If the stick significantly changes the direction of the puck, maybe, but when it just happens to glance of the stick with no real change in direction? That should be no goal - especially considering kicking your own stick into the puck to put it into the net is no goal.

Meh.

Officiating has taken a turn for the worse this year. Worst I've seen it but nonetheless they have nobody to blame but themselves. Can't hold on to a 2 goal lead with 4 minutes left then you don't deserve it.

A 2-goal lead on a team playing its 2nd in a B2B and which had done zilch for the first 16 minutes of the period.

I dunno, this was just a weird one.  Don't think it goes deeper than that.

Actually I think this one is on Gardiner for that awkward assignment switch.

Leafs were also pretty fortunate (thank Freddie) to not have given up a few goals coming into the 3rd. Things sort of evened out in the end, really.

worst loss of the year so far.  Had it in the bag.  Reilly needs to be glued to the bench
The first 15-16 minutes of the period I would have guaranteed you the Leafs would win, they were playing so much better than Columbus, I don't know WTF happened. That second goal on that idiotic pass by Rielly was just the worst.

Poor communication. Looks like Nylander is making a move to take Panarin, so Gardiner switches off. After the pass goes through and Gardiner has committed to the other side of the ice, Nylander decides to take the man he should have taken all along, leaving Panarin all alone.

Okay yeah I see that.

Nope that?s still mostly on Nylander for staring at the puck and doing absolutely nothing. I think gardiner expected nylander to at least try to pick up his defensive assignment, so he went for the pick carrier. Nylander then just floated in.

I'm usually as lenient as they come when it comes to line changes but that is pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, something's up with the refs this year. Leafs sure seem to be getting the short end of the stick every game.

Babcock, you put your SKILL players on the ice in OT 3 on 3!

This coach just baffles me with his lineup decisions!!!
Totally agree. Kadri has 1 point in 14 games ffs. Komorov isn't offensive at all. Matthews is your best faceoff guy yet he starts Kadri. And for the record, please please please get Komorov off Kadri's line. He should be on the 4th line/pker only. Not a top 9 guy. The fact he was 3rd in forwards ice time is a joke. Connor Brown should be on Kadri's line..Maybe even Kapanen instead. Disappointing Babcock

If you're not cheating, you're not trying.

Leafs played well (finally, for 2 periods), made one or two critical mistakes (compounded by some iffy reffing that you'll never hear about from the team), and took an (OT)L. We've played way worse lately and managed to scrape through to victories before, so if you liked those, this is what betting on coin flips feels like.

What I liked:
We didn't sit back on the lead; we did 1-2-2 trap, but we remained aggressive in the OZ when turnovers happened, and we were very quick in-and-out in our own zone for long stretches of the 3rd.

Andersen kept them in the game early as he often does.

Dermott was as advertised; as he gains experience in the NHL and gets accustomed to the players he will be facing, his aggressive reads will get better as he can get a bit overzealous. It's only been 2 games, but he's hovering just under 60% CF% so far. He hasn't played enough minutes to make that a stable number, but I think the plays he regularly makes will bear out as very positive.

What I didn't like:
Transitioning into shutdown mode, Babcock sits Dermott in place of Polak. Polak was having an okay game, but I don't think slow skating auto dumpers are the best way to keep the puck away from the opponents. Brown came in over Nylander with about 4 min to go over Nylander, which I was okay with (Babcock wanted to even out his numbers, and honestly, Brown earned more time).

Rielly got a bit excited on his stretch pass on the change, but flubbed it right along the ice. It's an easy fix and not a routine error for him, so I'm disappointed but not worried.

Marleau, for all the good that he does, honestly stays out a bit too long for my liking at times; A+ for the confidence, but maybe not at the expense of our real offense.

First time I have watched a full game since AZ.  I thought the Leafs were by far the better team, the were fast and accurate and seemed to be buoyed by Dermott's stellar play.
Nice to have him up.  Outside of Rielly's brain cramp the Leafs should have won.
And kudos to the ref for not calling the interference on Rielly in overtime, another game changer by the refs.
My only comment is Matthews is not out there shit kicking at all, I think he has another gear and he has to use it.

Yeah.  As much as Nylander was given the goat horns for not picking up his man, I'm pretty sure he shoulder checked and saw Jones going to the bench and didn't expect the man coming on for him to be almost ahead of him.  When Gardiner switched, Nylander didn't so that's on him.
