Blues @ Leafs - Mar. 7th, 7:00pm - CBC, Fan 590

You know, we're always so quick to talk about the media members we don't like or the guys who we think antagonize us but never let it be said that we're entirely negative. I'm going to go ahead and say something positive about someone working a Leafs broadcast:

Mike Johnson is amiably bland and inoffensive.

They're playing in an NHL hockey game, he should have known better.

I'm an hour out from Toronto. If somebody offered me free tickets I still wouldn't go to any game this season.

I can see the Air Canada Centre from my balcony and I'm not sure I'd go for free.

The inoffensive part is the big one, so many of those covering the Leafs are abhorrent.

Johnson actually seems pretty progressive when it comes to analytics etc he and Ray Ferraro are my favorite color guys.

My nephew has become a Leafs fan so when I've been offered tickets the last few years I've gone with him because he just enjoys the experience. These days, however, if someone offered me the tickets I'd probably pass and see if I could get the kid interested in a more constructive hobby like heroin addiction or joining ISIS.

Yeah, although that might just be in comparison to Glen "Shot totals are analytics" Healy.

The abrasive personalities are favoured in the media for causing tension. If everyone on the panel was logical and knowledgeable, it'd be a pretty quiet round of nodding and agreement every night.

I'm interested in Ferraro's insights and I also wish there were more colour commentators like that.

You're right, there are abrasive types who do it without going completely off the reservation though. Aaron Ward is a decent example.

Healy is just an awful cartoon villain, he's worse than Al Strachan ever was.

Nah. I think TV producers might take the path of least resistance in order to get some cheap and easy conflict but logical and knowledgeable people can and do disagree all the time.

This is the first game where it seems like a minor league team versus an NHL team, I know we've all joked before, but tonight is awful.

Every time Toronto tries something it is so telegraphed, The Blues easily break it up, they move the puck around effortlessly and are relentless in puck pursuit.

Hitchcock is a helluva coach.

Yeah. Pretty clear it was Bernier's fault in the 1st.

I think that was the old "change the goalie to motivate your team" move. Obviously pretty clear that didn't work.

Kinda like the old "change the coach to motivate your team" move they've tried a couple of times mixed in with the old "change the GM to motivate your team" move ...

Obviously, pretty clear nothing has worked.

This team is so pathetic, it's painful and embarrassing to watch. Gotta put it out of it's misery. They've got to clean house.

That ad they just ran for the Sabres/Leafs game this week was downright hilarious.

I missed it. Was it trying to be hilarious or was it hilarious because they were genuinely trying to get people to tune in.

There?s a time for calm and there?s a time for, well, not so calm.

Maple Leafs interim coach Peter Horachek exercised the latter after an opening period in Tampa the other night that was plain frustrating. Toronto had given up two goals, turned the puck over 11 times by the coaching staff?s count and been outshot 13-7.

?He can?t be just calm,? Roman Polak said. ?He had to go into the dressing room and start yelling at guys because that?s what we deserved because we didn?t play good. We didn?t deserve to be [told] ?be positive, let?s try in another period?. It doesn?t work like that.?
...
?There was no effort,? he (Horachek) said painfully afterward. ?You never want your team to come into a game without the highest possible effort and approach to the game. There are no real excuses for it so I?m not going to make any. That?s unacceptable for me. I?m not happy about it.?

With each passing game, I hate this team more and more.

I'll give youngsters like Rielly, Gardiner and Kadri a pass because they are being poisoned in this atmosphere. But guys like Kessel, Phaneuf, Lupul, Bozak, JvR who are showing a faint pulse at best -- they can all go pump sand. Best players on the team and they don't even look like they give a damn.

I hear you, but I'm sort of happy about it. I mean, would you rather they started looking unbeatable right now? It is, by all accounts, and good year to flatline, and hopefully pick up a franchise player in the draft. That is by far,the most important need for this club moving forward.

We have a chance to pick up the single most important piece for a club in rebuild mode, at this draft. I can't think of a time in modern Leaf history when there was a better chance to get that player. Tank Nation and the Leafs cant afford to f this up.

Most bottom feeders usually like to play the part of 'spoilers' as well as players wanting to keep their jobs.

Seems like the Leafs are doing their best to achieve the opposite.

Yes, tanking is one thing, but giving a truly gutless, couidn't-care-less performance is another.  The two don't match.
