They're telling us Gauthier isn't going to make it in this league.

Or they're showing Gauthier the perfect example of a player he needs to strive to be like.
Why not more love for our very own Goat?  The kid is already showing way more than Joe the Throw Colbourne. I like the trade, we will get back a few seconds and maybe a first in the next days

We kept Goat and traded Froese though, so I think we still love Freddy just fine.

Nice little move, basically a Roman Polak rental from last year for a Brian Boyle rental for this year. If he can help in the circle that's great. Grizzled old vet will fit in nicely. Lot's of playoff experience.

Babcock: Fred, we need you to be a defensively responsible Centre who wins faceoffs and can kill penalties

Gauthier: Coach, I've been a hockey player all my life. I don't understand a word you're saying.

Babcock: Be good defensively, win faceoffs, kill penalties, be big.

Gauthier: Are you speaking English? Or French? Or some sort of new alien language?

Babcock: Be good defensively...

Gauthier: Bub gorn defornsively?

Babcock: Forget it.

(trades for Brian Boyle, Gauthier figures it out.)

Now why couldn't this have been your 20,000th post?
hahaha Congrats Nik on winning 20, 000 debates, here's to 20, 000 more. Hopefully regarding future moves made or not made in a Cup Final ;)

I like it. Good mentor, faceoff skill, big guy to get in opposition goalies face and deflect pucks. I wonder if he'll see some PP time to make some havoc

Welcome to Toronto Brian Boyle!

This is an OK move and means Ben Smith never has to play again. I await and see if the Leafs do anything else before Wednesday.

Glad it's got your 'ok' stamp of approval Zee. Best of luck with the awaiting ;)

He was getting PP time, and playing in the top-9, this season.

How much time has Boyle spent at center versus the wing? How has his role morphed throughout the season? It looks like he?s spent a lot of time on Filppula?s wing.

Erlendson: He?s played left wing when on Filppula?s line; a combination that was sort of thrown together around December, with Drouin playing right wing, as the injury bug really started to hit the forward group. Boyle started the season pretty much at center in a normal penalty kill rotation as a third-fourth line center, but has been locked in at wing pretty much since December. He has gone from a role player to a legitimate top-nine forward who can play in any situation, including being a net-front presence on the powerplay.

I really like this move and if it gives us that extra little push too the playoffs, this young team will benefit a great deal.  Babs now has someone to take crucial draws and play those tough final minutes in close games. And if someone wants to overpay us for Bozak at trade dearline, let him go!

BB conference call. 'Real gud pro'.

Good point about the final few minutes gunnar36. This dude has seen it all.

Boyle has a ton of playoff experience, is good in the dressing room and I believe is the tallest forward in the NHL, so lots to like about this guy, even if just as a rental.

All I wanted out of the 16-17 Leafs was to ice a team that put forward effort night in and night out, was exciting to watch, and wouldn't finish in the bottom 5 in the NHL standings.
So needless to say I am quite happy with what has transpired thus far!

It has put the team in a tough spot though. On the one hand I'd like to see this team make a serious run at a playoff spot (hey we are starved for this as fans). On the other hand, I want to see the team maximize assets and continue building for the future. I think it's possible to do both by being careful.

With the addition of Boyle I can't see the team really dealing away players at the deadline, although I suppose one of Hunwick or Polak is possible with 8 d-men on the roster(certainly not both after this deal today).
Most of the heavy lifting should be done at the draft or in the summer as far as dealing Bozak, JVR, and Uncle Leo.

I must admit, I like the idea of Matthews, Kadri, Bozak and Boyle down the middle. Like others said, I think Bozak/JVR/Komarov, etc now become offseason rather than deadline moves. It will be interesting now to see if the Leafs can add a solid defender before Wednesday.

I think Bozak/JvR/Komarov were always going to be offseason moves in light of expansion, as it'd be an additional player to protect for the team that takes them.

I am hoping Gauthier stays in the lineup, if he is in fact being groomed as Boyle 2.0, in which case I'd like to eventually see Gauthier - Boyle - Hyman as our 4th line of huge (Gauthier bumping to the middle when Boyle's done).

Please be done with Martin and Smith. Useful 4th line gud pro wingers are always available for less than 2.5M. Money should be allocated to the centres, premiere scorers, and top 2/3 defenders.
