Sort of sound reasoning, in a weird way.

Simmonds should have come out to handle that. We need Foligno on the ice.

Exactly. That's about all Simmonds has to offer at this point, sad to say.
Well Foligno was on the ice right after with Perry so he decided to take care of it.. What's Simmonds supposed to do...jump over the boards?

Umm, Leafs were the "home" team...last change and all. They could have put anyone out there.

Well Keefe put Foligno out so mute point.

The point is he should have put Simmonds out there to risk breaking his hand on a helmut or visor.

Different goalie, same result.  Campbell played very well ... but was 0/2 on breakaways.  Good, but not good enough.

Whether or not he was at fault, Sandin was on for both goals.  We might see Dermott back in.

OTOH the PP looks like it has no chance if Rielly is QBing it.  And Rielly was at his best tonight.

Agree. I didn't like the 2nd goal on him. He missed the poke check and left the top of the net open.

Sandin >> Rielly

Thornton was actually the one that gave the puck away that led to the short handed goal.  Not sure why they had him on the PP

It will be interesting to see what Keefe does. The PP looked good with Sandin on it despite the shorty which was more on Joe. Sandin did what he could and truth be told, Jack kind of blew it. He didn't look good on it. The PP was terrible with Rielly. Nash did nothing to impress me which I guess is a good thing. He's terrible on the faceoffs. I think we may see Engvall get in if Tavares can't go, which seems pretty likely at this point.

On the highlights it looked to me that Jumbo Joe gaffed on both of the plays causing both goals.  Really unimpressed with the 'feels no pressure' player tonight.

I hope that Sandin stays in the lineup.

My take on the game.......  well it looks like the bad luck curse we have had since 67 reared it's ugly head yet again.
We beat Price on both of our 1st and 2nd pp ops but they hit the iron. We loose our captain, and three times the puck jumps over the glass and goes for a penalty.  You know just once it would have been nice to have our full team for at least one full game. Here's hoping lucks on our side in game 2.

So who's drawing in to replace Tavares for now? Even in the absence of much of an injury report, he's clearly going to be unavailable for some time.

It's gotta be Galchenyuk right?  Not to play center but in the lineup.

Kerfoot moves up to the second line or the bottom 9 of the line-up goes in the blender.

I think so.  At the end of the day the Leafs scored 1 goal.  Adam Brooks had his little hot streak but he's really not an offense driver.

Clear initial scans for Tavares is positive new but definitely not a clean bill of health. It just means there are no broken bones or apparent structural issues (thank goodness no neck/nerve stuff), right, L K?. Dubas' own playing career was truncated by concussions, and the team handled Nylander and Johnsson's injuries carefully. I hope they continue to do the right thing here and give him and his family all the time they need (even if Tavares wants otherwise).

It was hard to watch as a fan, and it must have been even harder for the team of friends and found family to both witness and have to carry on with their work.

Honestly, it's likely too early to know.  They will absolutely know if he had any bony injuries at this point with the Head/Neck CT he would have received.  Given that it's the NHL I wouldn't even be surprised if they did an MRI too to ass ligament injuries in the neck although a non-professional athlete wouldn't get an MRI right then and there.

But as far as nerve injuries its entirely possible that he could go on to develop symptoms in the 24-48 hours after the initial impact as tissue swelling settles out.  We at least know that he doesn't have catastrophic (paralysis) injury.  The neck hyperextension injury likely will have created a sprain (basically whiplash) and the head trauma itself concussion.

Given the high impact mechanism to his head I would anticipate that they will do another scan in 24-48 hours to reassess his head and if all is clear at that point he will be discharged home.

Head injuries are finicky.  He could be asymptomatic in 3 days or we might not see him again this postseason even with a deep run.

I think Gally comes in for sure. And then one or both of Engvall or Brooks could come in for Thornton/Simmonds/Nash.

I've been saying for awhile now that Thornton and Simmonds were both close to coming out of the line-up, and they needed those Winnipeg-like games early to stay in. They didn't do that last night, although how much of that is because of what they had to witness and where their mental state was could be up for debate.

As for Nash, I've always supported the Leafs playing him despite being a no offence-all defence player. But that was when we had two 1C's playing in front of him to carry the offence. We might need someone else (Engvall) in that spot now.

I'd personally do:

Foligno-Matthews-Marner
Galchenyuk-Kerfoot-Nylander
Mikheyev-Engvall-Hyman
Thornton-Spezza-Simmonds

I'm willing to give Wayne/Thornton a second game without a horrific injury early in the 1st period but at the same time "Wayne Train" had 1 hit in 12 minutes of ice time.  Nylander threw more hits than him.  Dude, you have 3 points in 20 games and no points in your last 10.  He's the first guy coming out of the lineup for me.
