-Sam Montembeault will start for the Canadiens
-Montreal's big offseason splash was of course the acquisition and signing of Noah Dobson. The offensive defenceman struggled last season with the Islanders and will look to get back to his high-scoring ways with the Habs
-The Canadiens will likely be rolling out the highest paid 4th line on opening night. The trio of Laine, Evans, and Anderson come in at just a shade over $17mil. Whether that's a sign of poor contracts or good depth is still to be determined

-Anthony Stolarz will start for the Leafs
-You'll likely hear this a million times on Wednesday, but the post-Mitch Marner era of the Leafs is officially underway. Matias Maccelli will likely get the first shot at the 1RW spot in the line-up. Domi was expected to start there alongside Matthews until a Scott Laughton injury caused Berube to switch things around
-The Leafs acquired 2 new players via waivers recently. Cayden Primeau will serve as back-up to start the season with Woll away from the team while Sammy Blais took some shifts at 4RW during practice on Tuesday but it's unclear if his Leafs debut will happen immediately
-A week ago it looked like Easton Cowan would be making his NHL debut on opening night, but things have changed and it's likely now a question of whether he'll be watching from the press box or preparing to start the season with the Marlies

A couple of things here:

1) If the Jays series against New York goes to 4 games the Leafs opener will be moved to Sportsnet One it looks like.

2) Things have maybe changed with the other streaming options since the playoffs. So if any of those links aren't working tomorrow or if anyone has other good options for that section please let me know.

Thanks CTB for getting us up and running. It looks like at least one of the streams I used last year (nhlstreams) is gone. Another, called nhlwebcast, is now slapstreams.com. I'd also love to hear from other folks what streams they are using.

And ... is there any way a US user can get a paid package with all (or almost all) of the Leafs games?

I believe ESPN is a good streaming option there, no? I remember looking to see if it made sense to try to use a VPN for that instead of Sportsnet last year but couldn't get it to work.
 
onhockey using vodcast links primarily is the one I am usually stuck with since nhlwebcast hit the skids towards the end of the 2024 season. I'm pretty much always watching on mobile, unless Prime is involved. Finally picked up an ad-blocker for the phone browser, which has made a significant difference.
 
I'm not on the "it's all over because of no Marner" train but I feel like I'm way less invested in the team than I have been in previous years. I know preseason hockey means very little but it felt like a lot of the same problems from last year were there in the play style. The team isn't fast enough to really control play with pure north south hockey and they get hemmed in their own zone a lot and give up a lot of goals late. That was a constant issue last year. Hopefully during the regular season the effort level is different but with no Woll for unknown reasons and lineup decisions like Domi up the middle it just feels like we are doing a lot of the same things that didn't work.

I use an IPTV service. It’s obviously not an “official” service. It gives me access to around 42,500 tv channels, streaming services and feeds from all round the globe, including the likes of the regional channels on ABC or sportsnet etc. And it cost me less for a year than most cable packages cost for a month. I can basically choose to watch Sportsnet, TSN, or the away feed via the likes of NESN or Fan Duel or whatever Bally Sports is these days for Leafs games. It does also have a section for all the sports like nba, nhl, nfl, mls, English premier league etc.

I don't think letting Marner go was a terrible move, but I don't think they made a significant improvement by redistributing that cap money. If the Leafs brass think bringing in Maccelli from Utah (and his 18 points, woof!) is going to be a difference maker, they are wishful dreamers. They needed to do something more substantial.

At least it's comprehensible that the 3rd and 4th line could actually score a goal this season.

I'm a masochist and watched a lot of games during the Grabovski/Phaneuf era... so *shrug.

I like bringing Roy and Joshua and I like Domi stepping in for Marner on the top line, but I feel they could have made some more improvements across the roster. They're still low on a center in my opinion.
 
For me, I've throughly enjoyed the last years of regular season games where quite a bit more often than not they won....this year
I have no such illusions for the regular season...and any hope for post-season hinges on them making it for one, and how they
perform as a team overall. The big-body direction means little in the regular season where the officiating is totally opposite to the playoffs.

And one or more "good-to-great" team defies regular season predictions and craps the season every year. Just hopefully not
the Leafs.
