Canucks vs Sharks

He'll be busy finding a new city to live in.

That's my guess, too. After bungling the Luongo situation, leaving the team with a bit of a cap mess, and on the decline, this first round embarrassment should be curtains for him. If ownership/management in Vancouver is smart, this summer will be the beginning of major changes.

Does the fact that he signed an extension in May 2012 change your mind?

I for one wish Vancouver doesn't rebuild yet.
I wanna see another year of them fooling themselves that this team can win it all. Kinda like what Calgary did the past 3 years.
And although I feel for Luongo, seeing Gillis suffer is oh so entertaining

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep ...i can see why the canucks hated the officiating in this series..but that was their game plan the year they went to the cup final wasn't it?  ..draw penalties and then just kill on the powerplay

Not in the slightest. People get fired shortly after signing extensions in the sports world. Look at what happened to Ron Wilson - fired months after signing his. If Vancouver management has as idea what they're doing, Gillis will be shown the door. He's failed miserably in the past year.

I agree. Gillis has completely botched the Luongo situation.

I can't help but think of the Heatley situation as a comparable. Bryan Murray held out for about as long as he could (1st week of training camp) and then pulled the trigger. Proof positive right there that you can't have a circus act like that in the dressing room during the season.

Gillis reminds me of all the evil Roman Emperors you see in the movies all rolled into one smug mug.

He should be shown the door.

He should be shown the door.

He took over a talent rich club - a club many regarded as having a legit shot to win the Cup.

He's had five shots to take them over the top.

The club today is considerably worse off than when he took over with bad contracts, bad deals and the window of opportunity with the Sedins as franchise players close to closed.

Maybe the coach made some mistakes but one has to consider the lack of talent he had to work with - particularly in scoring talent - somewhat thin after the Sedin line.

I'd be surprised if Gillis survives after his second first round exit and this one being a sweep. They handed him a great shot at winning it all and he blew it or failed miserably.

As I've mentioned above, I usually cheer for the Canucks as a Canadian team but my dislike of Gillis kind of overcame that this year and I enjoyed seeing his club get swept in the first round.

I, too, cheer for the Canadian-based teams during playoff time, and then some, but, for this series, I have had no empathy for the Vancouver Canucks.

The way the organization (and Gillis in particular) 'disrespected' Luongo, hanging him out to dry, so to speak, on speculation of whether he would be traded, back and forth, each and every time, all season long.  Sounded more like they were debating on what to do with a member of a circus act.

That is no way to treat a member of your organization.  Of course, kudos to Roberto who earned the respect of many fans  as well as non-fans alike, media, etc., for his professionalism throughout these series of events.

In fact, of all the players on the Vancouver squad in this series against San Jose, Luongo was probably the best player on the ice!

Anyways, Congrats San Jose!  A series well won!

Luongo 2.57 GAA .915 save% (12th out of 20 in save%)
Schneider 4.62 GAA .880 save% (18th out of 20 in save%)

Only two games each ... so we can't read too much into the stats.

Burrows (+1) & Henrik Sedin (0 +/-) led the team with .75 ppg over those four games. If Luongo wasn't their best player, I'd nominate Burrows - I thought he showed up every game.

Burrows also refused to make excuses in the post-game interview;  he carried himself better than the other players.

It will be interesting to see what Gillis or their next GM ends up doing. Canucks fans seem convinced that the last couple years are Vignault's fault, so who knows - Gillis could be getting another year to right the ship and AV gets canned for this years failures?

There's a lot of work to be done - they're in cap hell with a number of bad contracts. Luongo will be the interesting one - can he be traded, and if so, what for? Booth and Ballard are prime candidates for compliance buyouts, it feels almost like a given that they'll not be with the team next year...

This pleases me.

I feel bad for Schneider, but he didn't really show that he could do the job in the playoffs this year.

It will be interesting to see what the Canucks do going forward.

Don't like the Canucks but have become a fan of Lou this season.  His twitter acct has provided a few laughs and he has played very well in a bad situation.  Happy to see him give team a chance to win in his 2 starts and just as happy to see Schneider flop in his 2 starts.  Still don't like Canucks though.

Even with those buyouts, they won't have enough cap space to deal with their depth issues. They've gone full Calgary - poor depth, lots of expensive contracts (many with NTCs) and a declining, aging team. Very very few of the moves Gillis has made have really paid off (really, Hamhuis and Lapierre are the only ones he brought in on the roster right now that really contributed close to their pay grade) and their farm system is pretty weak. Vingneault probably needs to go, because he's probably reached the end of his shelf life behind the Canucks' bench, but I certainly wouldn't trust Gillis to get the team out of the mess he put them in.

AV likely gone for sure but I can't see how Gillis makes it out of this with his job intact.

He has saddled the franchise with a ridiculous amount of $$ tied up in bad, ummovable contracts. They are $100k over the cap for next year with only 17 contracts. They likely have to amnesty both Ballard and Booth, and he will again unlikely find anyone willing to take on Luongo. There is no way they can buy out Luongo. It's just too much cash.

My bet is they end up being forced to move Schneider. Teams will call for him.

On top of all this, he could have moved Luongo to the Leafs one of several times if he wasn't so adamanet the trade be a grand slam for him. All he had to do was keep some salary.  Now he gets to keep ALL of Luongo's salary. Leafs can't be interested at all anymore.

The Hodgson for Kassian trade looks terrible, especially since they badly needed a centre all year.  he then had to deal for Roy to make up for it, and that didn't work out very well either.

The Nucks are a contractual disaster, an aging team that looks like it could be very close to needing a major overhaul.

Gillis deserves to walk for making a mess of a good thing.  IMO they look a lot like the Flames did the year or two after they went to the semis... once a contender quickly fell apart mostly due to terrible GM decisions.
