CBA Agreement Reached

Guess Burke didn't get his 5 yrs. Moved off of 6 too apparently.

Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC)

Two sides settled on contract lengths of 7 years (other free agents), 8 (your own).

According to details of the tentative agreement...

Length of contracts:  7-8 yrs
Cap hit:                  63.4M
CBA length:              10 yr (with opt out in 8 yrs)
Variance:                  35% yr to yr

Nick Kypreos @RealKyper
Told possible reason #CBA deal. Bettman under intense pressure from major sponsors. Sponsors nervous investing again in "devalued product"

Other important notes;

Nick Kypreos ‏@RealKyper
Also on new #NHL #CBA contract variance lowest number can or be 50% less than highest. Example. 10m-5m

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris
As part of new CBA, each team can use up to two compliance buyouts prior to 2013-14 season. Will count against players' share.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger
Draft lottery will change. All 14 teams fully eligible for 1st pick overall. Weighting system may remain, but 4-move restriction out.

Daren Millard ‏@darenmillard
Not official but the new date for free agency will likely be put in play. Needs to be discussed but early leader is July 5th. After holidays

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun
If it's a 50-game season it would start Jan 15; if it's a 48-game season it would start Jan 19

Bruce Arthur ‏@bruce_arthur
Players held the line on a US$64.3-million cap in 2013-14, and got a guarantee it can't drop beyond that in future years of the deal.

Nick Kypreos ‏@RealKyper
Note on new #CBA compliance buyouts. #NHL clubs can use the 2 buyouts over the next 2 summers only. Also option to use both buyouts at once

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris
The two amnesty buyouts available to each team this summer will cost two-thirds of what remains on a player's deal.

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris
Small correction: Minimum salary only reaches $750,000 in Year 10 of new CBA. It will start at $525,000.

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris
It will be harder to bury one-way deals in the minors under new CBA. This season anything over $900,000 in AHL counts on a team's cap.

Looks like the NHL will let payers compete in the Olympics in Russia.

This short season will be an asterisk season but it will be nice to start talking about hockey on the ice and not all this legal baloney.

Well I kinda glad that the lockout is coming to a end finally but I  sure do have a lot resentment towards the league as a whole .I don't think I'll ever endorse or purchase another NHL product in the future .

I'm happy hockey is back.

Looking forward to this season.

Frustrated though that it took so long.

Let's talk hockey!

Well, I'm disappointed as a Leafs fan that this is another CBA that acts as a disincentive for a fanbase to contribute to the on-ice strength of their favourite team but looking at it removed from the perspective of a Leafs fan I think it all went fairly well. The players got a better deal(they'll probably earn 51 or 52 percent of HRR over the course of the deal) and re-established themselves as a legitimate union with purpose and solidarity by virtue of waiting while the owners got, well, more money.

Also, while, we're at it, isn't the whole "players don't get paid during the playoffs" angle kind of meaningless these days? Revenues generated in the playoffs still count as HRR and players still get 57 or 50 or whatever percentage of it ultimately.

On that note, why did the league and players bother negotiating about the dollar limit on the cap?  That just redistributes money in different ways amongst players.

I'm certainly disappointed as a leaf fan too.  Less room to exploit our financial advantage. No penalties to the teams that did exploit their financial advantage the last go around.  And the leafs still suck. Here's hoping we win the new lottery.

Well, the same reason they didn't widen the gap between the ceiling and the floor. The league has always used these CBA's as a means to try and establish their utopian vision of thirty different 41-41 teams.

Apparently the players got something along the lines of what they wanted in terms of a defined benefit pension too so that, if nothing else, will serve as their "win" here.

... and the owners get their 50%.

Well, as I said, factor in the make whole and it probably ends up as 49 or 48 but that's close enough for government work I suppose. They also killed backdiving deals and got term limits on contracts so they'll dol alright.

The more I look at this the more it feels like the NHL had to go to all out war again just to close loopholes they left glaringly open in the last CBA.  Back diving deals, 'unlimited' term and the jump in revenue split in the final year to 57% (I believe it was 52% in years prior) were all holes in the last deal they should have never left open.

Will be fun to see what agents come up with in loopholes in the new CBA.. give them a year or two to figure it out.

So, all you informed people, my simple question is this: Does this get settled in time for a 48-gamer, or not?  Yea or nay?  What thinkest thous?

Huh.  Who'da thunk?
