CBA Agreement Reached

Well, I'm disappointed as a Leafs fan that this is another CBA that acts as a disincentive for a fanbase to contribute to the on-ice strength of their favourite team but looking at it removed from the perspective of a Leafs fan I think it all went fairly well. The players got a better deal(they'll probably earn 51 or 52 percent of HRR over the course of the deal) and re-established themselves as a legitimate union with purpose and solidarity by virtue of waiting while the owners got, well, more money.

I'm certainly disappointed as a leaf fan too.  Less room to exploit our financial advantage. No penalties to the teams that did exploit their financial advantage the last go around.  And the leafs still suck. Here's hoping we win the new lottery.

Moral of story: manage more like Detroit.

But I have no say in that as a fan. As a fan I have no say whatsoever in who owns or runs the team. I'm sure Red Wings fans feel that Ken Holland's smart decisions validate them and their choice of team but with a system that allows bigger revenues to actually flex their financial money the money I spent on a fan could, and usually did, contribute to a team's success.

When I heard the news this morning, I was a lot more "meh" than I thought I would be.

Hopefully more frequent visits here will get my enthusiasm back up where it needs to be - I did plan on coming back if they didn't lose this season, after all....

Yeah I was already lukewarm on the NHL product in the couple years before the lockout; this last display of greed was, for me, the icing on the cake.  I'll still catch the odd game but won't invest a single cent in the Leafs franchise or league.  Part of me hopes that others are in the same boat.  Both the league and players deserve to suffer for this debacle.

Ugh, finally. If I see another hockey analyst standing in front of a building speculating about labour negotiations, I'll lose it. Coincidentally, I no longer watch sports news.

Yeah, no kidding. I read an amusing (and a bit sad) tweet from Gino Reda a few weeks ago "Tonight on TSN's That's Hockey, a guy in a suit walks down a hallway".

FriedgeHNIC: NHL sends memo to clubs indicating no camps before Saturday (and may not open until Monday), 48-game season to begin Jan. 19

So I guess that being able to trade cap space is not happening, correct?

Latest report is that teams can retain up to $3M in salary per player and up to $5M overall.

This doesn't seem like a great deal for the weaker teams who this lockout was primarily supposed to help. Oh well...not our problem. Haha

Deal will be ratified Wednesday in New York...

I heard Neil Smith on the radio this morning who brought up a good point. With a very short camp and condensed schedule, there's going to be very little time for practices before and during the season. New coaches and new players to teams could be in tough to teach/adapt to new systems. It might be a good thing Burke didn't wait until the summer to replace Wilson.

Isn't that the opposite of trading cap space though? Wouldn't trading Cap space be 3M in space for a 1st rounder or something like that (or player + space for player + Pick/prospect)?

Trading Phaneuf @ 3M (and eating the other 3M) isn't exactly the same thing is it?

I'm trying to figure out the benefits (besides the obvious potential UFA ones) that Burke has created by keeping Cap space free.

If he can't do creative things with it, it's not really an asset (especially if he sticks to 5 year deals).

I don't think anything short of a $30 mil cap and $30 mil in revenue sharing to each of the weak teams would keep them out of trouble.  Those teams are either loss leaders for their owners or they are failed businesses that should be relocated or blown up.
