Cell Phones

Question:

I'm shopping for a cell phone for my teenage daughter. She's 14. I don't want to pay big bucks, but I do understand the need for something she can "browse the net" with. That being said, I refuse to go get her an Iphone or Galaxy 4 just so she can fit in with her friends.

I've been looking at some HTC models that run in the Low $100-$150 range.

Are there any phones anyone would suggest? Does anyone have experience with the HTC's? Are they reliable?

A few of my friends have used HTC phones, and, from what I can tell from their experiences is that their higher end phones are good, while their lower end phones aren't. Pretty much all of my friends that had HTC phones have not purchased a 2nd one.

And that there is my fear. I think that's the case for most phones out there. You pay for what you get. Unfortunately, to get something that's really reliable you're into the big dollars.

Any brand or individual phone that you would recommend. I heard the Blackberry Z30 is good  ;D

These two phones are supposed to be among the best for somebody on a budget:

I've always had a soft spot for the Nexus phones. If for whatever reason my next phone wasn't an iPhone I'd probably lean towards whatever they have out.

I'm not sure if they went elsewhere because of reliability issues or because they didn't like the phone or if they just wanted something higher-end. All I know is that they almost all went to a Samsung Galaxy phone afterwards.

As for what phone to go for, it really depends on your absolute max budget. You can probably pick up an older iPhone or an S3 for a relatively reasonable price.

Thanks,

Unfortunately the older iPhone's(4,4s) are still running in the $250+ range. The S3's are up there too and I am hesitant to buy a used/refurbished S3. My older daughter has had nothing but problems with her S3.

Rogers has the 4S for free on a 2 year contract.

Yes this is true. We'd love to avoid a contract as it forces my daughter to be completely responsible for her phone as opposed to her defaulting to "Mom and dad will pay it" with the contract.

Fair enough. I totally get that.

And now you see my dilemma.  ;D

The phone I had my eye on was the HTC One V.

I also looked at the Moto G but to find an unlocked model, it's up in the $250 range.

Another one I was looking at was the Galaxy S2

There are a lot of people out there that don't know that Adobe killed mobile Flash themselves

Except, this isn't exactly true.  Here's what they said:

We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.  We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations.  We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.

Essentially, they're not developing new features or extending its functionality.  But they are providing bug fixes and security updates.

Long story short, saying flash is irrelevant is not correct.  The web may be headed that way, at least for mobile devices, but they're not there yet.

Like I said, I didn't want to make a big discussion out of this.

For some reason I picture nutman driving around in this:

Just don't BBM while driving, you'll end up like this:

Does it need to be a phone?  What about an iPod touch?  Has wifi for connectivity, but obviously, no phone connection.

Not likely.. this is my 1st BB. I tried it and I liked it. I run my own company and it works for me.

Suddenly it all makes sense:

I take it your a clone, and run with the flavor of the month so to speak. myself I do my homework, and go with what is the better product.

you're getting ridiculous, nutman. If the Z10 is the better product in your opinion, that's great. But if the iPhone, or an android phone or a windows phone is the better product for someone else's needs, that's great too. There are a lot of good products out there, the Blackberrys included.

Using something other than your personal favorite doesn't make someone a clone or sheep or whatever you want to rudely call them. It's a mobile device, it's not that serious.

Also, considering how long iOS and Android devices have held the two largest portions of the market share, it's absolutely ridiculous to call them the flavour of the month. I mean, the iPhone has been one of, if not the, best selling phones for the last 7 years. That's not flavour of the month by any means.

My phone makes and receives calls when I'm out and about, which is the sum total of my cell phone needs, and didn't cost me very much money. I couldn't be happier.
