Coach Mike Babcock

Saw this on reddit. It's old, but not something I've seen yet.

There are some great money quotes in here, especially after the fact.

Some insight into why Kessel was shipped out the way he was right there, not directly mind you, but past the need to deconstruct the 'core'.

Edit to add "for the next three years people are going to think we don't have a clue what we're doing"... I like that.

Interesting article on Mike's time as coach/player of the Whitley Warriors in England

Off the ice, Babcock quickly became familiar with the English northeast. To earn extra money, he and four friends used to drive to Edinburgh every Tuesday and Thursday in one car. When they got to Scotland, they'd buy four cars at auctions, drive them back into England and sell them by the weekend.

There were college classes during weekdays and hockey practices two nights a week. The Warriors played mostly on weekends, two games in two nights.

?I can tell you one of the best things I did as a coach over there was I got the guys to drink on Monday and Tuesday instead of on Friday and Saturday,? Babcock joked. ?That might have been the biggest thing I got done.?

That sure sounds like Stamkos isn't in their plans.

I'm assuming you mean this:

"The change of players from where we were, from trying to sign guys on July 1 just to get them before they signed somewhere else, to now being in a position where we probably can?t because we?ve got too many players... "

If the Leafs want Stamkos, making room is the least of their problems. I took this more to mean they won't have room, or need, to sign many guys on short, cheap deals in the hopes of flipping them at the deadline. Better to let all the guys they have now compete for those jobs and see rises to the occasion.

I think he meant this...

Darren Dreger: Does it tempt you, though, to look outside and maybe add a piece here or there, whether it?s a goalie or a defenceman or what have you? Or do you first have to learn what you?ve got? Or are you at a point now where you think you?ve got a pretty good handle on what you?ve got coming?

Mike Babcock: I think you?ve always got to be adding pieces. You know the pieces you don?t have. In saying that, those big pieces that fans and media fantasize about are usually added when your team is ready, not when your team is growing. We?re in the growing phase

He also said, at another point in the interview, that he's had a lot of time to rehearse his misleading, non-answers.

I thought it was a very good, enjoyable interview where he managed to say a lot without saying much at all.

That's a pretty straightforward answer, though. He's all but saying that we shouldn't expect the team to sign Stamkos.

That said, he did say "usually" so I think we can still be at unlikely but you never know.

And he's all but saying we should expect the Leafs to go hard after Tavares next summer!

Well, I'm sure he wouldn't say anything that could be construed to mean fans should expect to sign Stamkos. Managing expectations has been the group's communications strategy for a year now. This seems consistent with that.

Sure, but the thing about those kinds of players getting added later on in the process is also consistent with the truth.

Sure, but, at the same time, he could have very easily kept his answer to the first couple sentences. Adding the caveat about big pieces seems like a very specific message that he/the team is trying to communicate.

That was my take too.

You've clarified nothing.  :P
