Coach Mike Babcock

My take on this is simply there's a lot of money here.
Why not.

The tools to do the job (Players) are not yet assembled if they ever do get to that part.
The coach can't score, and defend the players are responsible for that part.
Tucker's salary comes off the books this year.
1 Million.
The Leafs threw to much money around you can see that in the team and what their paying their top players.

2 years i give em.
Carlyle filled this, and then Wilson before him and where are they now?

So what's the alternative if signing one of the best coaches in hockey isn't the right thing to do? -- fold the team?

Getting Babcock is almost as good as getting McDavid.

Congratulations to the WIGNALs on the birth of their baby.

Congratulations to the Maple Leafs organization on the hiring of new coach Mike Babcock.

Congratulations to Leafs fans everywhere for sheer happiness (on something right & positive to finally smile about).

Bring on the champagne!!

I think
Shanahan assumes role of GM if only in title. It's pretty obvious that he Dubas Hunter and now The Chin are running this here show.

I'm pretty sure that was the plan all along when it came to the Leafs.  They were never looking for a pure GM to make all of the decisions, they just needed another guy to add to the mix.

latest

Hurm, that looks a little like Mike Futa...

So, yay, fantastic news. The Leafs flexed some financial muscle and it sounds like Babcock was interested in Toronto ( if the rumour of him calling the Leafs back on deadline day is true ). It also sounds like he'll have a higher level of authority than he had in Detroit ( not difficult to parse that message ) and the whole thing has thoroughly pissed off Buffalo.

That's a tiny little internal triple gold for me.

I agree with Nik the Trik's assessment here...

Babcock gets all the power he wants, and none of it that he doesn't.

If they bring in another guy to be "GM" it'll be to do administration, farm team stuff etc. Shanahan, Dubas, Hunter and Babcock are running the team now and that's that. Whoever comes in (if anyone?)  would be GM in name only.

That being said, im beyond thrilled. I fantasized about Babcock coming to Toronto for at least 5 years. I love his personality, his work ethic, his  style, everything...

Im still in shock something good has happened to the Leafs. Only took a decade.

Does anyone know where I can watch HBO's 24/7 (with Babcock)? I enjoyed watching Babcock in that series and would really like to watch it again.

I believe You Tube has it

I would have thought so too, but I cannot find it. Either it is not out there or my Google skills are not what I thought they were.

Thanks. Looks like some of the episodes work and others are bad links, but I will take what I can get. Appreciate it.

The last time I was that exited about a new coach it was Pat Quinn in the late 90s

I remember he turning this team pretty quicklly and at the start of that season he had 3 rookies on D (Kaberle, Markov, Tremblay), a few free agent signs and a drastic change on the way this team played. Sure not in the Cap area.

Hopefully the Leafs can pull a rebuild with one of the best coaches in the game.

Welcome to TO Mike.

Some news/notes that may have been missed in all of the excitement yesterday:

1) According to McKenzie, Babcock's only title at the moment is Head Coach. So this isn't a Patrick Roy-type situation where he's officially a member of the front office staff as well. No doubt his input will be listened to though.

2) Some reports said that there was an out-clause after 5 years, but McKenzie says that's not the case.

3) Guy Boucher flew in from Switzerland to Toronto two days ago to speak to the Leafs about the head coaching job. According to Louis Jean the Leafs were actually talking to Boucher when Babcock came calling. Jean wrote "Boucher came close to becoming head coach. A matter of hours". Babcock apparently offered Boucher a spot in Detroit last year but it was turned down, so it's not known if he'll be interested in it now.

Just to clear one thing up here, Dubas is technically also the GM of the Marlies. I don't think whoever comes in will be handling the farm team as Dubas has already spoken extensively about how he wants to completely revamp the way the Leafs handle their minor-league teams.

Sundin and Joseph helped that along though.
