mirtle: Confirmed that Franson will have an out if he signs an NHL deal at some point this season.

Didn't see how signing for a full season would have benefitted him. Even if he played great over there it probably wouldn't have meant much to Burke in terms of what his next contract would look like. And the competition for a spot on the blue line next season will be a lot tougher than it will be whenever this one starts with Rielly potentially making the jump and a potentially rejuvenated Ranger.

I have mixed feelings about Franson. He did not make a great impression last year, but I also think he should have been given more of a chance to show what he can do.

It's funny I remember at some point early last season one of the television commentators saying that Franson was making a great impression with the Leafs staff and was approaching an 'untouchable' status. Of course that changed in the 2nd half of the season, but.....

While I wasn't overly impressed with Franson last year, he wasn't 7th on the depth list IMO where he was relegated to for good chunks of the season.

I wasn't impressed with most of the team last season...only a few bright spots and none were on defence.

Gunnarsson's emergance as a big minute eater and Gardiner did not impress you even a little?

I was impressed with both those guys. I also thought Phaneuf had a decent season, for the competition he faced.

Sounds like Franson really might not be interested in coming back...

Franson's frustration stemmed from the limited role he had last season (57 games). His numbers & subsequent value suffered as a result.

From what I understood, Leafs and Franson camp disagreed on his value after last season, much of which saw him relegated to press box.

Even if the NHL lockout gets resolved, Cody Franson won't be with the #leafs. The RFA has signed with Brynas for the entire year.

Can't say I blame him.  He did well on a talented Nashville blueline and was looking for an upgrade.  Wilson played the same games with Franson he did with Ian White, and now we have another talented dman leaving the organization.

Well said. But could Burke not of corrected those errors by Wilson and gotten him signed. I know that there was an apparent difference in opinion of the players value, but if Burke was coming in offering him a contract similar to what he earned last year, I would be indisagreement as well.

Despite having a poor season, he was on pace for 30 points and 9 or 10 goals. That's not bad. He was also only a -1 and I felt he played half decent on the PK.

He had 3:19 of total PK time last season.

heh delete delete delete. Must of been someone else I was thinking of. Anyhooo....I still think he deserves a raise. Not 3 or 4 million. But in the range of 1.5 would of been fine IMO.

Does anyone have any articles mentioning what exactly he was seeking?

He scored at a 31-point pace, that's not bad at all.  29 points the year before.  Most of the guys in that range seem to be making 3+ million.  At 25 he should still have some upside left?

That said he wasn't playing tough minutes, got a healthy dose of PP time when he played, and doesn't use his size as much as most of us would probably like.

I wouldn't mind keeping him for around $2M.  If the guys coming up are as good as some say (I haven't been paying much attention) perhaps he is good trade bait though.

I'm not a big fan of the Leafs letting him go for someone like Holzer to step in. I had limited exposure to Holzer but I wasn't overly impressed with his play either, and that was with the Marlies.

He is only 1 year younger than Franson, he's yet to stick with the big boys(only played 2 games in NHL so far), and he only potted 25 points last season(20 regular season, 5 playoffs). To me, Holzer is more of a replacement for Komisarek, but that of course is hoping that Holzer can even handle it in the NHL.

And if that's the case, buy out Komisarek to make room for Holzer and see how he does.

I agree.  Holzer or any player shouldn't be given a spot, they should have to earn it.

Yet, he's pencilled in on most line ups. I don't get the love affair.

I'm not seeing the negatives with Holzer.

I followed the Marlies relatively closely and I followed a lot of posters here and people on Twitter who rarely missed a game and the overwhelming sense was that Holzer was a defensive behemoth.

I don't think anyone is saying he gets a spot automatically at camp, but what a lot of people are saying is that he should be given the opportunity to compete at least as the 6/7 guy given the strides he made last year.

He reminds me of a Gunnarsson with more physicality and less offensive punch.

Yes yes and yes.  He's just solid, steady, physical and efficient.  I saw him live about 7-8x last year plus on TV on the road during the playoffs.  He is just so adept at dismantling oncoming rushes, retrieving the puck and getting it out of the zone quick, done with urgency but no panic.  If he can do the same things at NHL speed then he's going to be a rock on the blueline - something badly needed back there.
