Contract: Skittles Edition

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Anyone who has ever heard Paul Marner talk about Mitch knew this was coming. And if you haven't, here's a taste:

Mitch Marner is very well situated to land a very solid deal. All the narratives line up in his favour, the on-ice performance is just one giant fire emoji, and Dubas just finished with the longest RFA contract standoff and made some resolutions.

Eh. Lots of hockey parents talk big. Actually making a big deal of things is another matter.

He forced a skills coach to enroll a 4 year old Mitch against 6-8 year olds :)

No, I get it, he's a terrible hockey dad. Thing is, just like with Nylander, I still think it's an exception rather than the rule that the negotiations with these guys have anything to do with the parents. The question is to what extent Mitch may have internalized any of this.

For what it's worth though Marner has always struck me as the most hockey-bot of the Leafs three young guys.

You can really see who programmed Mitch's motor.

But I can also see why Marner nearly quit hockey when he started off his draft year in a slump. Good on them for helping him reset and focus on enjoying the game.

Sportsnet this Saturday: "Kyle Dubas has publicly acknowledged the possibility of an offer sheet for Matthews and Marner. Let's discuss who might offer one."

Yeah, I get why they play into people's imaginations but until you see a drastic shift in the way RFA compensation works, you're never going to see a top tier RFA leave his team on an offer sheet.

Even the four first rounders for Nylander probably would have been a terrible deal for the Leafs.

Is this press scrum simply a consolidated answer to every mainstream media narrative?

Getting Matthews done first makes sense anyway. Pretty much regardless of how this season goes Matthews will set some sort of ceiling for Marner.

Cue the "Marner & Leafs Locked in Standoff" headlines.

Marner will be basically "I want the exact same deal Matthews signed"

I really thought Marner would have been the easiest of the 3??? I guess I was was too into the local boy lifts club scenario and forgot it's still just business for everyone.

Yes cue the standoff because I don't see him getting a Matthews type money. Johnny Hockey who by all accounts is better then Marner makes like 9.2% towards Calgary's cap. Mitch at 10% based on 85 mill is 8.5 per. Fair deal? Not according to most who say he's worth 10+. But is he? Kucherov is under 10 mill. Is Auston worth 12? Can he realistically ask for McDavid percentage? Going to be interesting to see what happens with both these guys and a bunch of other RFA's because there are plenty of really good players up after this year..

Gaudreau is also older. Was Gaudreau this good this young?
