Cowen placed on waivers

He actually sounded somewhat salvegable to me.  It sounded to me like it was an injury issue that was holding him back.  I guess the Leafs must have checked all that out by now.  I actually thought Babcock might turn him around though and then they Leafs could move him at next year's trade deadline.  It looks like they've given up on him completely now, it's too bad.

Some info on Cowen from Friedman's 30 Thoughts:

Jared Cowen is not going to file a grievance against the Toronto Maple Leafs for sending him home ? a move designed to keep him healthy for a buyout. (It is expected the NHLPA will notify the league that it will retain its right to do so in any future situations similar to this, but will pass in this instance).

?We?re going to take the time to get Jared right,? agent Rick Valette said Tuesday. ?He?s not injured, but he?s not right. Any doctor would clear him to play. But there are compensation issues when your hip isn?t 100 per cent, other parts of your body are affected. Rather than having him sit as a healthy scratch with the Leafs or the Marlies, we?re going to have him go see some people and get healthy.?

Cowen is back in Ottawa, but Valette plans to send him to the Mayo Clinic and some other specialists he knows. Damien Cox reported Saturday that Toronto granted him permission to speak with other teams, but Valette will wait until seasons start ending before pursuing them. ?He?s 25 years old. We?ve got six months to get him back to being a good player. That?s our game plan for now.?

I guess a lot of players do play thru injury, not 100% not unlike Hunwick trying to finish the season but finally not performing or having to much pain.  So he is good enough to play but seems to have some sort of nagging hip injury.. Hope its not his Labrum as my son is going to under go that surgery soon.

He's being preserved.  Think of him as an egg.  If he cracks, the Leafs can't buy him out.  It's a win-win situation because he just wants to get healthy so he can play again.  IMO he has been held back by these injury issues for years.  I think he could turn out to be a really great player.

Best thing they could do for him, really. It's similar to what Stroman did during his recovery: he basically rebuilt everything from scratch (physically and mechanics-wise) using the down-time the injury afforded him.

My son  has had a hip problem (finally diagnosed after 6 years, Labrum).  If Cowan needs to sort his hip out he better go private, LOL.  He is only 25 or 26 a good 6 months of rehab and hopefully he gets to play again.
