Dave Nonis is a bust

i saw some stuff about calculating how many wins they would have if they kept the shots down to a realistic level and suggesting they would be 20 pts higher in the standings if they did.  Do we really see this team being at 102 points? I mean that would be nice but would suggest they've entered the level of being contenders and reality tells us that's not even close to the truth.

Not a single person suggested they'd be 20 points higher in the standings. No one.

We do have two players putting up top-5 performances in their respective positions. And it's not like the rest of our roster is Buffalo-bad. I'm not saying that this team has the potential to be legit Stanley cup contenders season in and season out, but with the seasons that Kessel and Bernier have had thinking this team could have been top-10 in the league this year isn't a stretch.

We all said that this would be a middling team prior to the season starting, yes. But nobody saw these performances from Kessel and Bernier coming when making those predictions.

Where did you see that?

Things like that are a completely guessing game anyway.  If you cut 400 shots off the Leafs season, that doesn't mean that they will still get .918 SV% between Reimer and Bernier.  Those 400 shots are going to come from a number of different scenarios and it wouldn't necessarily have that big of an effect.

I think if anything it's just more likely that the Leafs are sitting in the around 90 points if they improved their defensive game.  A few more wins here and there, and some of those SO wins would be regulation wins instead.

I also think a lot of the predictions took into account some of the issues that raised their heads as last season progressed and the team became more familiar with the system Carlyle had in place, though, I don't think anyone saw them being this bad on the defensive side of the puck either.

Of course it's just a guessing game, but I don't see why Bernier would have significantly worse stats facing less shots with a, presumably, better defensive structure.  But just generally speaking even it would help in those areas you mention.
