David Clarkson - Signs with Maple Leafs

As of now the only forwards with some real hockey skill are Kessel, Lupul and Kadri, and to certain extent Kuli, the rest are hard nosed players, pure srappers and Kessel?s buddy Bozie

JVR?

Carlyle wants him to be a power forward standing in front of the net, no fancy plays. Remember, everyone has the exact role and any deviation from Randy?s course is forbidden and not tolerated.

Uh, ok, but he still is a skilled hockey player.

Clarkson apparently has some pretty severe flaws. Not liking this signing, overpaid by $2 million, and the length is absolutely atrocious.

So what would they be or are we just going with "apparently"?

People who have seen him play a lot (me, for one) are talking about what a good pickup this is even if its an expensive one.  This guy brings far far more to the table than just the goals he has produced in the last 2 years.

Doesn't skate well - very awkward stride, always falling down, doesn't pass and opts to throw the puck on net, not a good defensive player.

Yes, I look forward to Clarkson opening a lot of space for his team-mates to score bunches of them.

Man, I hope you're right about that, but, I don't see it happening. Nevertheless, at the price he's being paid, he has to contribute a lot more than just opening up space to be worth the money - and by that, I mean actually putting a good number of pucks in the net himself and setting up a good number of goals from others.

^ This thing here.

Nonis so far hasn't really made a deal that seems like a slam-dunk winner, unlike some of Burke's moves.  Maybe because there's less scope to pull a rabbit out of a hat when the hat you've been left isn't a tattered fedora previously worn by JFJ.

Or something.

Sure, I like JVR.

So when you refer to the deals of Burkes that looked like slam-dunk winners do you mean like the Komisarek signing that was loved at the time or the Giguere and Phaneuf trades that have proven to be so dynamite?

No, the "some" means the "some" I had in mind, you know, like the Beauchemin deal.

I think he'll be around 20-25G and 20-25A with the physical edge he brings.

You can't put a price on "too much man".

Apparently you can. And it's 2 million more dollars and 5 extra years.

For context (on top of Lucic, Clowe and Hartnell), RFA Bryan Bickell just signed 4M x 4 years.

That's a guy who's never scored more than 17G, 37Pts and was an RFA. He's also 27.

So based on that is Clarkson overpaid? Sure, but not by a ton. Again, for a UFA, this is the market value.

I went to school with Clarkson. He loves T.O. and will play his @ss off for this team.

2013 2nd All-Star team Beauchemin?

So the one where, at the time, it looked like the Leafs were taking on a bad contract and Gardiner was just known as a good prospect? Or you mean how it worked out so he traded the guy who was a second team all-star this year? Right, gotcha.

I'm in agreement that the term is too long and the coin is too much.  But in trying to set that aside, Clarkson is the type of player the Leafs desperately needed and now they have it.

I'm waiting for the advanced stats guys to tell me that Clarkson is the best in the league.

Who wasn't anywhere near an allstar with us, if memory serves?  But if you want to give back Gardiner, hey, gotcha.
