He's a guy that produces virtually 0 offence, and he's not the typical rugged stay-at-home player. He's also likely to slot into our bottom pairing when we start to look at playoffs, so $3mil there just seems higher than what you'd like to budget for that spot.
So yeah that type of deal does make sense I just think we could do it for even a little less, like $8mil over 4 years. I bet even Marincin probably doesn't realize how valuable he can be.
I think the thing there though is that when negotiating a long-ish term deal with a younger player you probably have to allow for some potential for growth. So while Marincin right now is probably no more than a 2 million dollar player on an open market in three to four years time he might be.
I also think it would be relatively risk free. Yeah, 3 million dollars is probably more than you'd ideally spend on a bottom pairing guy you're also not likely to reach a point where the gap there would have a negative impact on the team for the duration of the deal. Marner and Matthews haven't played in the league yet and the Leafs aren't likely to be at/near the cap until those guys have rich second contracts. So at worst you might have one year where Marincin isn't a great fit and you'd ideally like to free up the space and you'd have to think it'd be a movable deal at that point.
It's a minor thing to be talking about, I realize, I just can't help but think that with the front office shakeups we're seeing in Phoenix in Florida and the like that players like Marincin and their solid advanced numbers/not as impressive point totals may not come as cheaply in the future.
