Devils @ Leafs - Oct. 11th, 7:30pm - SN, Fan 590

I understand they had to lose, but this is one hell of a way to lose. Blech.

Wasn't there night.  50 shots on net, only three goals, not much you can do about that.
You can play a better defensive game lol

I feel like this is my fault.

Because you didn't fight hard enough for the Leafs to keep Seth?

If I had Twitter, I would've begged Shanahan to step in for Seth. But I didn't, and now he is gone.

Game 1: my stream froze in the third and I got back on to see we gave up a lack-of-focus goal in a blowout
Game 2: didn't get to watch until partway through the third, when the Leafs put the dagger into the comeback
Game 3: missed the first, when we were down 2, but saw the Zaitsev goal. Then the stream cut out again and I got back on to see we had given up the Panik gift. Kept watching to see the comeback bring playoff noise back to the Hanger for the regular season.
Game 4: missed it completely. But I see we gave up a 3-on-5 goal.

True, but I kind of feel like some of that was the Devils just capitalizing on their chances, and the Leafs not being able to, sort of like the Leafs first game against the Jets, only in reverse.  The 5 on 3 wasn't really something that happens every day, so for that one it was just one bad play after another that resulted in a goal.  I mean, Nylander literally shoots it on his own net.

Oh well, no harm in a little reality check. And the Devils were actually very, very good too. They've added  some very good yougn talent to that roster.

Not super sad I missed this game. The game-in-six was depressing enough. Most of the goals by the Devils were tough to stop. Hopefully Freddie picks it up soon.

Yucky game, tons of penalties, a little frustrating to watch. Leafs aren't going to win them all, that's for sure, but they are definitely going to need some better goaltending going forward. Andersen looks incredibly shaky.

The meat hooks are really out for Andersen right now aren't they?

Would it have been nice if he had made a save on the deflections (2), screen shot that went post and in, and breakaway last night?  Yes, we probably needed at least one or two considering the way the other goalie was playing.  Do I blame him for any of those goals? Nope, I blame the team in front of him.

He had no chance on the tic-tac-toe PP goal.  Again, team in front of him.

On the 5-on-3 short handed goal, well, I'd like to say him directing the puck out into the slot was a bad choice, but when the other team is down 2 men, you don't exactly expect a second man to come up on a rush.  That might be the only goal where I place blame on him, but the team in front of him did zero favours- it was a gong show of a sequence.

Don't get me wrong, I do expect him to be better and to make a few more stops on difficult plays like he did in the first period against the Jets.  With a team that isn't strong defensively in front of him, he's going to have to do that on nights when we don't have puck luck at the other end if we want to win.  So far this season he hasn't been great, but he hasn't been as bad as his stats suggest.

Some numbers to ponder:

The leafs have given up 16 goals on 124 shots so far through the 4 games, giving him a .871 Sv%.  The Leafs all-situation expected goals against at this point is 13.61.  So, Andersen's expected save percentage is sitting at .890  ....  The team in front of him needs to do a whole lot better defensively or we are going to be saying Andersen is garbage all year even when it isn't entirely deserved.

I think you could make a case that you deserve season tickets, and a spot on the teams charter.

Also though, the Devils really seem to have the Leafs number.  Wasn't there a game not to long ago (maybe it was long ago, the years are starting to blend together)  where the Leafs had a 6-1 lead or something like that and the Leafs coughed up the lead and lost in overtime 7-6.  I remember Gionta having a good night.  Always seems like the Devils play the Leafs really well, regardless of how good their team is.  Carolina too.

I remember that game as well, it was just last season.

This new Devils team is very different too. In many ways kind of reminded me a bit of early season last year Leafs, but with more elite goaltending.

All I have to do is make some questionable lifestyle and health decisions to show my dedication to the team, hope I get on camera to create a meme-moment...

That's been done.  You need to innovate.  Don't be dart guy.  Be dart guy++.
