Ducks @ Leafs - Dec. 19th, 7:30pm - SNO, TSN 1050

Nice chip from Gauthier.  Rather than just hammer the puck around the boards he got the puck to an open space for Hyman to dump the puck.

Babcock must not have liked that Nylander penalty. Mixing Matthews onto the JvR-Marner pairing.

I think if it sticks, we'll see peak-Marner, as he's the better option for transition give-and-go on that line (LC-RW).

I noticed that too. Doesn't seem like much but it's a calm play that means the difference between getting the puck out and a possible turnover.

One of my favourite things (and maybe my only favourite thing) about the Sportsnet broadcast, is when Romanuk tries to talk up an opposing player's quality and is immediately presented with the opposite:
  • Anaheim's great faceoff guys: Kadri promptly wins two draws in a row
  • Getzlaf's great patience with the puck and playmaking ability: promptly centers the puck down to his goalie

Play-by-play is hard. I couldn't do his job, but I can't help but laugh and enjoy it nonetheless.

I see this is a game where interference isn't going to be called when Anaheim does it because they play "Western Hockey"

It's crazy how much they've gotten away with given how tight they've called the Leafs.

At the end of the period in front of the benches Getzlaf pulled Naz towards himself with one hand, causing him to turnover the puck. I was surprised on that one, thought for sure there would be an even up call. I guess a call against Naz now has to be borderline exceptional.

Yeah, enjoy the interesting nuggets of info on other players when they roll into town. But it gets old the fifth time it's said. Yes, thank you Paul, I know Vermette is 64.7% on faceoffs. I heard you the first 8 times.

That's true. Colour commentary, on the other hand, should be easier - and, yet, I still treat everything Greg Millen says as if it's the opposite of reality.

2-2 against San Jose after regulation.
1-1 against Pittsburgh after regulation.
0-0 against Anaheim tonight.

If we show up on time and skate, we're competing against the League's best. Scary thing is, they've nowhere to go but up. Most Leafs are either young or incredibly young. And we've still got a steady stream of picks and prospects coming in for the next two years.

... and of course, saves like that from Steady Freddie.

If you're a little sick and tired of these broadcasters talking about how great Randy is as a coach, here's Mirtle to remind you of how bad he was: https://theathletic.com/30560/2016/12/19/mirtle-the-revisionist-history-that-follows-randy-carlyle/

Matthews really isn't remotely as good as Laine.  It's a massive ocean between the two.
