Enroth Signed [1 Year, 750k]

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Monday that the hockey club has signed free agent goaltender Jhonas Enroth to a one-year contract worth $750,000.

Wow, less than I expected... and they actually published the terms.  Lou on vacation?

Were there no other offers on the table for him? Because, yoink.

Bernier + Enroth + cap space + desperation trade/signing for a new goalie next season?
or
semi-desperate trade for Andersen + Enroth?

The Leafs revealing terms is an interesting wrinkle, there have been more teams doing this recently with some going as far to have a little salary cap type setup on their team pages.

I believe the Nashville one goes as far as to show you how they acquired the player etc too.

Perhaps this type of thing will become the norm as the league slowly realizes how popular sites like General Fanager and CapGeek have/had become.

You guys ready for a scorching hot take? Because of a combination of poor performance and potential injury, Enroth starts more games than Andersen this year.

FTFY.

Also, I don't see why they'd be desperate next summer.

Regardless, our goaltending tandem is now officially much cheaper than the start of last season.

I'd imagine the Cowen situation was the main reason this signing was delayed so long.  I think they have a good sense now of where its headed by making this signing and putting themselves over cap.

Oh yeah, those picks. Thanks.

Theoretical desperation due to a messier goaltender availability pool (Bishop, Fleury)? Honestly, I would've preferred the first option of riding out Bernier's contract, but I don't hate the path they ended up taking.

I envisioned the Leafs playing a less goalie-dependent system like the Babcock Wings, so I haven't invested any hopes into that slot.

Why do you view the Andersen deal as semi-desperate?

It just seemed pro-active to me. They saw a goalie they rated highly and made a move to get him while he was available. If the cost to acquire was too high, I could see it being called desperate but the 30th overall and a mid 2nd rounder seems like a reasonable price.

I'd hope that this off-season would be a monument to the idea that you don't have to worry too much about availability until the decision is actually in front of you. If you're willing to part with assets to make a deal there's really no way of telling who might be available between now and a year from now.

I largely agree with your assessment, in that Andersen is a pro-active move to stabilize the net and give our prospects time to develop. The two picks in and of themselves weren't that big a deal.

The way the trade shook out in the end appeared semi-desperate to me. We made basically all the concessions visible in those trades, just to land Andersen (2 picks, holding on to Bernier to save them money, the conditions on the pick that came back for the Bernier trade).

My take on the situation was probably coloured by my expectation for this season to be a contract-ride out year with an 'oops, we tanked it again' for Liljegren.

Eh, and I'm disappointed to say that this is looking less and less likely to be the plan.

Meh... my indifference seems to continue to grow towards the Leafs. I am not sure what will turn the tide at this point. I suppose I'm excited for the young talent pool, prospects and management but we're along way off from being competitive. I think we all agree this rebuild should of started 10 years ago. It's hard to stay on board forever considering how ugly of a ride it's been. I'll come around just not really into it like I have been in the past. It will probably be 15 years between meaningful hockey for this franchise (2003 - 2018, purposely not including 11-12 playoffs during a shorten year). I am such grouchy fan and assume nothing will ever go right, here's to hoping it does.

There is still time to hire an additional 'power skating consultant' from the figure skating world.

Pretty please.

Either way, it'll be very exciting to see what happens once the books open up a bit and we get a good look at the Big Three in the same line up.

I'm still not convinced that's true. I have a hard time looking at the moves the team made this summer or the roster overall and believing the team is going to produce better results in any meaningful way. They'll be more talented, but they'll also be much less experience and more prone to mistakes, inconsistency, etc. I still see a team that's quite likely to finish in the bottom 5.

I'm disappointed by that too but I never really thought it was going to be in the cards for them to be as nakedly in the tank as they were last year. That's probably not the environment you ideally want to bring good young players into.

You still want them to be bad and I still think they will be but realistically that just means they'll still be in semi-decent position to pick in the top 5.

I think they'll make significant strides this season. That's not to say that by the time the all star break rolls around, there won't be more 'mysterious' injuries that sideline good players the rest of the way again. **Wait...was I just thinking that, or did I actually write it in the post?**
