So how does the cap situation look okay now?
That's not an easy question to answer since we don't quite know how the roster will look, but here's my best guess:
JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Kadri-Kulemin
Raymond-Bolland-Colborne
McLaren-McClement-Orr
Clarkson
Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Ranger
Fraser-Franson
Liles
Reimer
Bernier
That's with Clarkson suspended, and assuming McLaren, Bolland, and Orr will all be healthy opening night. That roster gives us $333,333 in cap space. So if one of those guys are hurt, we're screwed.
I've said this before, but I think it would make a lot of sense to send Fraser to the minors, at least to start the season. One of he, Liles, or Ranger are going to be sitting in the pressbox and for a team this close to the cap it doesn't make sense to have your 7th defencemen making between $1mi-3.875mil. I think the odds of Liles or Ranger being sent down are pretty low, so that just leaves Fraser. If/when Nonis clears up some space by trading Liles then he can be called back up without the risk of re-entry waivers.
If Fraser is sent down, we'll have $1,258,333 in cap space. That's enough to potentially call up both Brennan ($600k) and Bodie ($600k) if injuries strike, but likely the Leafs would have to keep them off the roster for as long as possible to bank some cap space.
Oh, and sorry Rielly, but you're playing in the WHL again this season.
