Franson signed (1 year, 2M)

Since we're bringing up cap implications, can someone clarify what happens if you retain salary.  For instance, if the Leafs trade Liles and say they are retaining $1 million of his salary against the cap, does that pertain to each year remaining on his deal or strictly this year?

It would be for every season remaining on the deal.

Thanks.  Makes sense since I would have suggested retaining as much salary allowed this year to rinse the team clean of the contract.

I haven't seen a clear indication if you can only retain salary in the current year and not the rest of the contract.  But you can definitely retain salary over the life of the contract.  From Capgeek.com:

In the CBA it specifically says that you can only retain salary for each of the remaining years of a players contract.

Thanks for clarifying.  Moving Liles in a Retained Salary Transaction becomes less appealing- especially if we are retaining 50%.  1.93 million cap hit for the next three years (including this)... helps us this year with our current cap crunch, but might hurt us next year when we try and resign most of our Free Agents!  Considering his cap hit in the minors is 2.95 million, that might be a better route for the time being- at least he can be called up in case of injury and then brought back up after we send Reilly to the WJHC.

I'm still trying to understand why Nonis didn't think it was in his best interest to buyout Liles. I get that you don't get rid of guys before you have a full set of players to work with, but I think the Leafs have enough of a crop of defensemen in the system that buying out Liles would have been a good gamble.

Especially since his hit would have only been 875k for this year. I thought it was the best move based on what's going down right now. It's not like this situation we're in right now wasn't going to play out like this, we saw this coming.

maybe he has a taker for him, if he keeps some salary or takes some back. Cheaper long-term than a buyout hit for 8 years or whatever.

I mean, sure, if he has a trade and is willing to take 875k hit on retaining that bit of the cap, but to me, it was the best option at the time. So, maybe he has a trade, in fact I sure hope he does, as I'm not really going to like having a depleted line-up, if that's the way is goes.

If he has a trade that can happen without retaining salary, it would be even better, but is that realistically going to happen with so many teams close to the cap and Liles having a select number of teams he'll go to?

Kudos to Nonis, I have not believed this could be realistically done (Naz and Cody both signed). Franson for 2M is an absolute steal. Even thoigh he may walk next year, Reilly will hopefully be ready.

Dave, now lock Phil Kessel long term please.

Franson won't walk next year, as he's still RFA, but it'll make negotiations tougher, since Franson will have arbitration rights intact.

The bigger thing to me is that with arbitration, Franson will only get a 1-2 year deal, if he elects to go to arbitration. I'd rather have him signed long term. Hopefully they can work it out before arbitration.

Arbitration hearing don't really happen with much frequency these days. Shea Weber was only arbitration case that actually went to a hearing in the last 3 offseasons.

I get that, but it's legitimate leverage that Cody has over the team. Nonis would most likely have to hand out more dollars to avoid the arbitration case. I mean, sure Cody would probably want more years on his contract and avoid the hearing, but it will only cost the Leafs, not Franson.

Hey there.  I have a question that one of you may know the answer too.  Since have Franson signed today and this years cap hit is 2M.  How long of a waiting period does Nonis have to wait to sign Franson to an extension.  I mean can he not sign a three year 9M extension tomorrow.  Therefore a cap hit of 2M this year 3m next year.  So whats the waiting period to sign an extension, if any?

Players who are on 1 year deals have to wait until January to sign an  extension.

From the article 50.5 (f) of the CBA:

(iv) A Player who is party to a one-year SPC may not enter into an "extension"
of such SPC prior to January 1 of the League Year covered by such SPC.

I was hoping they would have traded franson.  They have too many offensive defensemen.  They need more tough stay at home types.

That can always be done, Franson signed to a 1 year deal at 2 million is more attractive to another team then a RFA.

Franson has a nasty edge at times.

Well, I'm impressed.  I thought there was no way this could happen, though we are clearly still on the edge.  Clarkson's suspension is really quite a thorn in the side.  A couple of short term injuries and we are skating 9 forwards and 6 D.

If we substituted Broll for Orr, we'd have a bit of breathing room, but of course that will never happen.

Obviously we should be hoping that Liles and Franson play lights out for the part of the season.  Then trade one of them prior to the deadline for a young forward or prospect depth up front.  That would be an amazing outcome.
