Hey Carlyle .... how about trying something different on your POS power play?  This guy is beginning to grate on me as coach.

I used to blame Wilson for the PP but I guess I was wrong. Same bunch on the ice and same futility. I agree try something different at least personnel. Kadri barely out there and Frattino who was your best player Tuesday on the 3rd line and no pp time unless I've missed it. How much ice time have those 2 had.

There doesn't seem to be any reasoning behind Carlyle's decisions. I feel like he just puts names in a hat.

That being said, the first goal was Kadri's fault so maybe he's sending a message?

It's still stupid. We need a goal. Why leave your highest scorer on the bench?

Kostka has been fine even strength, but he is not a first PP calibre player right now.

As for Phaneuf, I understand statistically he misses the net around the same amount as other frequent shooting dmen, but this season, he has been terrible trying to hit thr net on the PP.

maybe he could put Phaneuf on the OTHER point for a change?

That and cut his minutes AND send Kostka back to the AHL where he belongs.  That little feelgood longshot story is very much over.

I really don't understand where your hate for Kostka comes from, jeez. And with Gardiner and Komisarek out do you have any other suggestions? Talk about rage when you're losing.

It's not hate, it's just observation of poor play.  You want suggestions?  Explain to me why he should be on the top pairing over, say, Gunnarsson.  Or should be playing at all instead of Holzer.

Orr has a minute more of ES-TOI than Kadri...WTH.  And on the whole Kadri has less than 8 minutes of TOI.  Awesome stuff Carlyle.

That's pretty wild. There have been a lot of powerplays though.

Those two are simply not a first pairing on any kind of decent NHL team.

Both -7 and special teams struggling it's just not working.

How would Holzer be an improvement when Fraser has shown to be better than Holzer thus far this season, who is also already playing? Why would Holzer be an improvement, an AHLer, over Kostka? And your statement was to put him down to the AHL. I don't know what player you've been watching but the Kostka I've been watching hasn't really been an issue or a non-NHL worthy player. How is Holzer more worthy of playing at all vs. Kostka? Tell me. Or is it just personal bias?

Kostka is far down the list on why the team isn't winning this game imo.

Gunnarsson isn't very good either.

Bit of an unfair stat when you're playing half the game and against the best opponents. I agree there are adjustments that need to be made, maybe change the top pairing, scale back on minutes, but there has to be some context to +/- which is a notoriously controversial statistic.

For example, are you really going to tell me Mark Fraser and Cody Franson have been the best defensemen based on +/-? Because that's an argument I wouldn't at all touch.

The problem among other things is we have expensive guys like Liles and Komisarek that aren't even good enough to play a top role over a decent AHLer.  In some cases they are too stupid to even be in the lineup...

Kostka was nowhere on the Leafs depth chart until camp.  He turned Carlyle's head and has gotten scads of icetime with our supposed #1 stud.  Holzer has more upside and would be better defensively.

I never said Kostka is the biggest problem on the team -- Lord knows we have plenty.  But he's a helluva lot closer to being an AHL journeyman than an NHL regular, let alone a first pairing guy.
