General Leafs Talk v2.0

It's everyone's favourite time of year, I'm doing to pump Phaneuf's tires.

So far through 21 games, has played the most minutes on the team, by extraskater.com's metrics has faced the toughest opposition forwards, and has only been on the ice for 6 even-strength goals against.

In the same vein, for Jake Gardiner - has only been on for 8 against and according to extraskater.com has actually played a few MORE minutes at even-strength than Phaneuf has (Phaneuf gets more PP time and way more SH time).

The goalies deserve a lot of the credit, but I've been very happy with those two this season (and you too, Carl Gunnarsson).  Credit to Carlyle for how he's used Gardiner this season.

I am absolutely loving the Gardiner-Franson pairing. I know they fumble the puck every now and then, but that's going to happen more than the other guys since they're handling the puck more often. But the way they can skate and pass the puck back and forth with each other is something that we haven't seen in a pairing in years. And for all the talk about how they aren't the strongest defensively people seem to forget that getting the puck out of your zone and starting break outs is an important defensive trait too.

I'm worried we're going to lose Franson soon because of cap constraints, but if we can lock those two up long-term that would be a fantastic second pairing for years and years.

I don't believe my eyes.

I completely agree. I've never been a Phaneuf fan. Not even back in his Calgary days. But over the first 20 games of the season I've been loving the way he is playing.

McLaren, Ashton and Bozak were skating together at practice today.

Looks like McLaren will could out of the line up tomorrow.

Interesting how players in contract years can find a little more in the tank.

markhmasters: Leafs 4th line: McClement-Smithson-Orr ... Bozak, McLaren, Ashton the extras

Whoa. Is Carlyle listening to us or just toying with us?

Woah woah woah woah. Kadri-Smith-Holland down the middle. McClement on the 4th line. Only one face puncher in the line-up. Gardiner is playing every game and getting plenty of ice-time. And Carlyle's talking about how getting outshot is a problem not some master plan.

I don't think I've ever said this before, but kudos Randy.

Carlyle scratched McLaren in the playoffs last year for games 2-7. He also was scratched for 7 out of 42 regular season games he was on the roster for last year.

So a total of 13 games out of 49 or 26% of games.

After losing that fight last night he should be scratched for good!

Or at least replace Orr! McLaren at least has some semblence of being a hockey player.

I think Orr actually provides the intimidation they are looking for and McLaren really doesn't, even though he can play a little.

Uh oh, here comes the 'intimidation' doesn't mean anything discussion......again.

Healy is saying that contract talks have started with Bolland and McClement have started.

It might be a good time to get Bolland signed to a cap friendly deal.

I'm really not sure how I feel about re-signing Bolland. Unless he's giving us a pretty big discount, but he'll probably look for about $4mil. We would essentially be committing to Bozak-Kadri-Bolland down the middle for the next few years. That's not great to say the least.

And while I know that we say this every single year, seeing Big Joe and Marleau as potential free agents this summer is pretty intriguing.

Also someone's name is notably missing there. Enjoy watching Kulemin while you can guys.

Paul Stastny as well. He would be a nice fit with Kessel/JVR.

I think it only makes sense to feel uneasy about committing to Bolland. As great as he was playing, the injuries seem to follow him around and it takes a lot out of the team to have him missing half a season.

Losing Kulemin will be unfortunate too. Depends on how much he wants I guess.
