Gleason traded to Toronto for Liles

DarrenDreger: Leafs and Hurricanes trying to complete Tim Gleason trade. It's not done, still some work to do, but it's headed towards conclusion. #tsn

This has bad news written all over it. Considering the decline in his play, Gleason's contract is terrible.

Wonder what's going the other way?

Agreed. Absolutely brutal. If I had to put together a list of 10 players I'd never want on the Leafs, he'd be on it.

Kypreos's latest.

#Canes Gleason not practicing waiting 4  #NHL trade. Strong speculation is he could be a #Leaf today. Liles/prospect is talk going other way

Yeah I really don't get it. Gleason is awful any way you look at it. I haven't really been following this situation lately - can anyone give me some insight on why the Leafs would want Gleason?

Kypreos says that a Liles and a prospect is likely headed to Carolina. Brutal. Liles is better than Gleason. I'm ok with a one-for-one swap I guess, but throwing in another prospect is pointless.

So, unless the Canes retain some, that means adding salary for the next 2 seasons instead of clearing any (not a lot, but, still, backwards) and giving up a prospect for a guy nearing the end of his career (though, there are a handful of guys that could be included that the team wouldn't really miss - Carrick, Crescenzi, etc.). If it's a prospect with any real NHL potential . . . ugh.

That would certainly be a head scratcher.

He's a Carlyle hockey player though.  Plays somewhat physical, can play on the PK, chips the puck up the boards and has limited to no offensive ability.

The downside is that he was never all that fast to begin with and has only gotten slower over the past few years.  He will rival Hal Gill in terms of worst shot from the blueline.  He's not sound defensively because his mobility has declined.  He's a 4M cap hit for two additional years.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Tim Gleason has not yet been asked to waive his NTC to go to TOR but expectation is he will waive to go to TOR if/when asked.

I wish this wasn't coming from media guys that actually have credibility.

3-4 years ago, Gleason was a very useful defensive-minded blue liner, but, age and injuries have pretty much destroyed his mobility. Nonis and Carlyle need to start living in the present instead of scouting the past.

More cart-before-the-horse management from the GM.  Letting the team get built in the image of the coach instead of building around the existing strengths.

Gleason was held out of Carolina's game last night even though he was among the regular 3 pairings at their morning practice. And he was held out of practice this morning too. So it was pretty clear he was being traded soon.

So, the Canes have Komisarek and would rather him than Gleason? And Nonis is the guy who just bought out Komisarek... What am I not understanding? Couldn't the Leafs have got to a similar outcome just by holding onto Komi?

I don't know if I buy that Carlyle has any particular type of player but if the idea here is that the sort of player Liles is doesn't really fit a need whereas Gleason gives them an option for a stay at home type that isn't Mark Fraser then that makes a certain sense, I suppose.

Still not overly fond of it though.

What? This says that Carolina would rather have Liles than Gleason, not Komisarek.
