Gleason traded to Toronto for Liles

I was at the game and Gleason made a huge gaffe right in front of me, bobble the puck away, very shaky and then gave it right away again which almost led to a goal. But overall he as decent. Phaneuf sucked tonight and I always have liked him in the live situation. Two stupid penalties one leading to the first goal by Ribaro.

To me Phaneuf wasn't playing particularly well for a long time before he was re-signed, but he's been especially sleepy since.

I think Gleason has limited gas in his tank. I would play him a bit more like McClement, a few less minutes.  Lets get rid of Cody (whom I used to like) whom really sucked tonight and bring up Brennan whom has earned the right. The difference tonight was getting two goals from our defenders, we need a lot more of that?Kadri played a very good game from where I sat which was right next to the Yotes bench.  Kessel was very good tonight. Lupul was trying god bless him and JVR almost made a magic goal by pulling down a puck and teeing it up next to the net.  Holland was not that great, and I wanted him to be. Raymond was decent. Ashton made a good move in the first on a break. Bodie was good as well.  Playing much more like a team.

Yes he had some gaff's last night. Franson had two or three gaffs, and Kadri went from hero to zero, IMO within one min. But they won. Bernier played well, although must of the shots were from the outside. Gleason has been a pleasent surprise. I hope he can keep it up.

Gleason is what I'd hoped Komi to be.

Just steady. The odd gaffe here and there but reliable when needed.

I just hope he does not get hit in the face, with the way he blocks shots.

Gleason getting quite a few accolades in the latest game day thread.  AKA "Worst d-man in the league!!!"  ;)

All he needs to do is develop a blood clot in his leg and his transformation into Dmitri Yushkevich will be complete.

I don't think he's been bad or anything, but it seems Leafs fans in general tend to fall over themselves for "tough" players - if they block a lot of shots or hit a lot they're given much more leeway than those who might not or might appear not to as much.

It kind of reminds me of Mark Fraser, he was getting a fair bit of attention last season seemingly on the back of his +/- and the fact that he was a physical defenseman even if neither of those things really meant he was all that good.

To reiterate, I've been fine with Gleason's play thus far.

Well, the blood clot and ripping out a man's still-beating heart and showing it to him before he dies.

I don't think that's just a Leafs fan issue, it's pretty much hockey wide. Hockey announcers in particular love to fawn over shot blocking defencemen.

True - which, if they have tons of blocked shots could be a sign of playing an awful lot in your own end when you're on the ice.

Actually I should add I think the best part of having Gleason back there is he can take some of those tougher minutes and d-zone starts and allow some more offensive play from other defensemen on the team.  If Carlyle can feel confident throwing him out there instead of always Phaneuf/Gunnarsson then that is a positive for the team.

quinnesq: Facts about Tim Gleason. Now in Game 13, he's been on for 11 goals against, 5 for. That's 2nd worst of regular Leaf D, just behind Fraser./1

quinnesq: Gleason has a Corsi of 42.9%, a RelCorsi of -4.3%. (If those numbers matter to you.) That's worst of all regular Leaf Defencemen. /2

quinnesq: The media says Gleason takes tonnes of D-zone face-offs. The stats say he takes fewer than Ranger, Cody, Jake or Fraser. /3

quinnesq: The media says Gleason gets the tough competition. The stats say the QComp of his linemates is better than the QComp of his opponents. /4

Now, I don't necessarily put a lot of stock into some of these stats, but, it's still interesting.

And one additional tidbit:

quinnesq: Remember when we didn't like Dmen who couldn't score & were slow, so they took penalties? Gleason has 6 penalties in 13 games. And 2 pts. /5
